TC renegade .58 cal

I just acquired a Thompson center renegade in 58 caliber. The barrel is severely eroded with hardly any rifling left. I was hoping to pick up a used barrel on eBay, but there are none to be had. I also haven’t been able to find any aftermarket barrels. Does anybody have any suggestions?
 
Your Endeavor will be well worth it… The 58 muzzloader can be used on very Large game and puts a hurting on most anything. Those Bowling balls can do some serious work on a animal.
I use 75 grains FFg- Very accurate with a 280gr Patched Round ball. Don’t imagine any White tail at any angle can Not have a full thru and thru with that. Bigger game can get a bit more of a Charge.

How bad is the barrel you have?
Had you considered trying it before Attempting to replace?

Those .58 barrels are hard to find. Perhaps the Hoyt could bore and rifle it to .60". ? I have a "Zouave" or more correctly Replica Remington 1863 Contract Rifle that I've been meaning to ask if he could take out to .62" and rifle it for round ball. I'd go bigger if he'd do it, but would be fine with .60" which I think would be more than doable. Good luck!
 
I'd try shooting it first. If it is hopeless, I would send it to bobby Hoyt for a reline.
 
my .58 is a tc big boar. and your right the big round ball kills.

Bobby Hoyt can reline the barrel for you and give it the twist you want for round balls or conicals. the other option would be to find a Renegade barrels on Ebay that is rusted out and have Bobby Hoyt re-bore it to .58. I had Bobby re-bore an ole 50 cal flint lock Renegade barrel to .58 with a 1:66 gain twist and it will put 3 balls into a inch at 50 yards using 90 grains of 2f.
 
I haven’t had a time to properly clean or shoot it yet. But it appears to be darn near a smoothbore. When I shoot it I’ll try and use heavy patching. If it doesn’t work, I will take everyone’s advice, and have it re-lined. I’ve wanted a 58 for sometime.
 
I gotta say, The 58 is my favorite. Even with a PRB - It’s a Sledgehammer. When I first got my Kodiak I figured it would shoot A Conical the best since it has a 1:48 twist. After shooting Bulleyes at 50 yards with a PRB, I didn’t try anything else. To cool man… Hunk o Lead lobbed out there!

I shot a small doe with my 58 Zouave this fall - holy crap! A mere 75 grains of OE 1.5F and a PRB and the thing had huge entrance and exit holes, there was about enough heart left to frame the hole, and the torso even had some bloodshot meat.

I expect to finally land a modern rifle tag for deer next year, so it will likely mean a break from muzzleloader hunting. I plan to fool around with minies and a REAL in this rifle. The smallest minie design I have is 400 grains and the REAL is 440 grains. Definitely more whomp than necessary for white tails, but I figured they would be fun to fool with.

Sometimes I get a modern Elk tag as I have a couple close friends that don't muzzle-load, and that way we can hunt together. But, I still take/use a muzzle loader. In Washington State you can legally use archery or a muzzle loader during modern season, if you have a modern tag. Is that different where you live?
 
We don't have tags and haven't had them since the 70's. You can use any primitive weapon during regular gun season. You can use any legal gun that you use for regular gun season for all but the first primitive weapons season.

Yes, we can use any legal weapon (handgun, muzzleloader, bow, crossbow, rifle) with a rifle tag. I want to use dad's rifle for a deer, so I won't use a muzzleloader for that tag.
 
Oh yeah. Sometimes I'll take my Great-Grand-dad's double 12 gauge (shell gun, not ML) out bear hunting, when Turkey and grouse are open at the same time. Shot in the right barrel, and a .690" ball in the left for bear. And Grand-dad's Luger on me hip! :)
 
Lap it out with JB bore paste and try it. Give it a good go. Those TC barrels did not have very deep rifling and appear to be worn when they are not. I've resurrected many with a couple hundred strokes of JB. Protect the muzzle while you work.
 
The crown is probably the more important consideration, if its not pitted or damaged and there's enough rifling to spin a ball or bullet it outta shoot ok.
