Inch group at 50 yards. Good or substandard?

The build is a 16" steel bull barrel, Volquartsen trigger, scope, CCI Standard Velocity. Averaging a 1 inch group at 50 yards.

I don't consider that to be very good for the build.

That’s about what have gotten out of stock but scoped 597, 60, 10-22 rifles. If you only have one type of ammunition, it would be shear luck for you to have the best accuracy the firearm can produce. There is no telling what they are going to like.

I am going to post an image of my "Target 10/22".

As you can see, the stock definitely is playing no role in the barrel except for near the receiver. If you notice near the end of the barrel,...a faint line a couple of inches from the very end. Not sure if this would play much of a role, but that is a turned down [to the same OD of the barrel] Levang Linear Compensator that was Cerakoted at the same time as the barrel [if you don't know what the Levang is, you can google search for an image].

So, the age of the barrel...the support [or lack, if that's the case], the Levang, the not quite so good of trigger....I suppose any [or all] of these things might play a role in accuracy.

BTW, all shots were done on a bench rest [one of the plastic ones you'd normally see at a conservation range.

What scope are you using? Looks like a Nikon 3-9?

what is the parallax set at? I ask because I fought with a 10/22 and couldn’t shrink much less than 1” at 50 consistently, then I got a scope I could set the parallax properly with and I was able to shrink it to 3/4” groups at 50

my struggle was I could not find a difference in ammo, they all shot about the same

new scope, proper parallax for 50 yds and it was much better to see some results

Something seemed to happen to the CCI Standard Velocity around 2010ish, at least in my experience. Everything I bought before that was a tack driver for the money, since then I'm lucky to get 1.5" groups at 50 yards. Aguila SV is my cheap go-to round now when I want better than average accuracy.

Looks to be more than 9x magnification there. Truthfully if you go the 10/22 route then experimentation of all manner is what you must accept if you’re chasing accuracy. If it were me, I’d start by cleaning that barrel thoroughly before further testing. If that failed, I’d buy a good barrel.

.22lr ammo can make a big difference. Garden variety 10/22 with bull barrel from CDNN, Hogue stock, and BSA 4-16X mildot AO scope, nothing special:

50ft NRA target shot at 50 yards off sandbags. Target on the left is various "bulk pack" ammo, all are 10 shot groups.

CCI SV I use as reference was bought after the 2013 component shortage and it has consistently produced sub 1" 10 shot groups during my 10/22s and T/CR22 factory break-in threads with some 3/4" groups. CCI Blazer (Boxed 40 gr, not loose bulk pack) has also consistently produced sub 1" groups.

This 50 yard target was shot with factory 10/22 around 3000 round break in (See CCI SV #1 and #2 groups) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...lector-3-break-in.859106/page-3#post-12110978
