Your Favorite Ruger & Why

My custom 4" Stainless Redhawk in .41magnum that I made from a 5.5" gun. I did all the work myself including, cutting and recrowning the barrel, milling a slot in the top rib and installing a new front sight, trigger work, dehorn the whole gun including rounding the bottom of the grip and matching the grips, and lastly I bead blasted the whole gun. I looked for this gun for over a decade and now Ruger makes a 4" Redhawk. I believe I am the only one in .41magnum so it's very special to me. Any time I am in the woods, it accompanies me in a cross chest holster.

Next would be my custom GP-100 in .357magnum. It is a factory DAO with a 3" barrel. Again I performed a trigger job, dehorned and bead blasted it as well. I carry this one concealed on a regular basis.

Bigmike45, that's a beautiful job of gunsmithing...well done Senor! While I'm not a big fan of Ruger's Redhawks, that one really tickles my fancy...and in a superb caliber too...well done, I say.

My all-time favorite is a Flat Top, Blued Blackhawk in .44 Special, 4-5/8" bbl. if you please!

The bluing doesn't make sense for back country (read extremes of wx a long way from the chimney smoke), nor do the wood stocks that I favor, and perhaps the short bbl. isn't as useful to some of the brethren for hunting...

But I shoot it well, like its looks and it's heavy weight soaks up the recoil from Skelton level loads in my 75 yo arthritic hands. It'll do to ride the trail with, I'd opine.

Best regards, Rod......Pic of said gun, with 6 shots at 25 yds back when I had better eyes and hands. (I was 63 at the time & sure would like to call that one '10' at 4 o'clock back into the group!) The gun came from Lipsey's first run of .44 Spl BH's and I restocked it with Cocobolo with my own 'gun fighter' grip dimensions.

That Redhawk is AWESOME!
Ya, I had one of the rare .357s until they brought those back too, lol.

Very nice shooting Rod and Thank you for the compliment. One of the members of the gun club I belong to shoots the same gun you have. He fell in love with it 25 years ago, and like you is very proficient with it. His favorite targets are the feral hogs that tear up his pastures. As I said, working on mine was a true labor of love. I have been machining steel for many years so that part of the process was easy for me. The first thing I did though was to shoot the gun before starting the work and after cutting and recrowning the barrel. In both cases the gun shot very well so I proceeded to make it what I wanted. The hardest part in the work on my Redhawk was the first cut on the barrel of a $600 gun, after that it was all easy. I knew what I wanted the end result to be and took my time getting it there. All in all, I spent about 6 months working, about 2 hours in the evening several days a week. Since I also handload I have created several loads that really make the gun shoot well.

5" GP 100 in 10mm. Working man's big bore.

thats a nice concept gun. I need to look into these. Also shoots 40s&w right? Guessing it can also handle full power 10mm nuke loads with ease.

Have shot RH and SRH, BH and SBH (plus SS, SP and GP).

I really only like TWO Ruger revolvers.
The old 3 screw Superblackhawks, and a 9.5" Super Redhawk (also in .44 magnum).

However, the little SP101 5 shot 4.25" .357 might be a consideration.

My '70 SBH wears a factory brass frame.

My favorite Ruger I’ve owned has to be an M77V in 22-250 that shot tiny groups at crazy distances….

but since this is a handgun/revolver thread, a single six I bought in Montana was a fun gun to shoot. Sold both when I left for an overseas tour. Selling either was a mistake.

My favorite that I own is the only one I own- a Wrangler.

My favorite in general would be either a 4-5/8” stainless Vaquero in .357 Mag or a 3” half lug SP101

The old New Model Super Blackhawk the photo bombers nose is touching. 44 Mag, I think 1978 manufactured. Had to add the Hogues as I'm getting on in age and it is a bit easier for me to hang on to with full power loads.
The only one of the bunch that a better shooter is the non Ruger above it

Though I have several Rugers, My favorite was a MKII 22/45, 6 7/8" slabside that i had a Simmons 4X pistol scope on it. That thing was a tackdriver! I used it for small game & plinking. It added some sport to squirrel hunting in the Rockies.

Like an idiot I sold it to buy another gun. If I find another im gonna buy it.

As for ones I own now..... probably a tie between the 10/22 with choate folding stock & 2X red dot and my MKII 22/45 4" heavy barrel that I carry when I'm coyote hunting and use it for small game. I would scope it but I'd have to get it drilled & tapped.

my favorite: 1028210816.jpg

ruger blackhawk 45 cal. bought new april 2000 for $299 plus tax. shown here with recoil resistant grips, built-in thumb safety and the standard 265 grain lswc @ 1100 fps load. accurate from the get-go, light weight and rugged (my heavy load is 325 grain wfnpb @ 1275 fps).

Screenshot_20220103-202120_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20220103-201924_Gallery.jpg My favorite Ruger is this Bisley Vaquero in 357. This was the first gun of my "inheritance" from my dad. I actually think he gave it to me, because at the time (shortly after Sandy Hook) ammo was hard to find. I would go to his house to shoot, and blast thru my 50 or 100 rounds and be out of ammo. I think he didn't want to shoot by himself, so he gave me this gun and said not to worry about running out of 357 ammo. "I can always make more."

This gun and all those reloads, sent me on my way down the reloading rabbit hole. A few years later and I've acquired so much stuff lol. 3 presses, 2 tumblers, case prep machines, bullet molds, lead pots, etc etc. I've got enough primers and powder to last me quite a few years, because I stocked up pretty deep when it was cheap.

So I can thank my dad and this Ruger, for teaching me to stock up and being able to continue my favorite hobby when ammo runs dry. Well I actually enjoy reloading, so I now have two favorite hobbies.

I've only got a couple of Ruger's these days. A 50th anniversary Singlle-Six, that to be honest, I don't shoot all that much. Like most single-actions, I find it somewhat boring. Good gun though.

And a "Wally-World Special" 10/22 from about 2006 or so. Now this is a squirrel killing machine. It wears a 4X32 Bushnell blister pack scope, and a $5.00 Wally-World nylon sling. It's had a "Swamp Fox" trigger job, and is just shoots lights out at squirrel ranges. It's longer barrel, and DSP style stock give it a "big rifle" feel that I really like.

WWSBushnell.jpg

I've owned a bunch of others over the years. I had a 22/45 that I mounted a BSA red dot scope on. That was a good shooter. I had several of the Speed/Security-Six revolvers, and...Oh, heck. I've just owned a bunch of Rugers....Oh...how'd I forget this one. This one was without a doubt, my favorite one.

Ruger 77/22 from the first year production. Man I liked this rifle. It was everything I say the 10/22 was, and had better looks. When I was in the squirrel woods with it, I felt like I was off hunting Elk or something. I bought it used with the Tasco 2X7 scope already on it and never touched the adjustments. I killed a few squirrels with it. One of the guns I definately regret having to sell, but I was out of work at the time. I regret this one more than the Colt Python I sold about the same time. I don't even have a decent picture of it.

002-5.jpg

I really liked that gun.

I have 7 favorites, LC9S Pro 9mm, SP101 2 1/8 inch .357, Single 6 Convertible, Blackhawk.357, Super Blackhawk .44mag, MK1 Target.22 6 7/8 heavy tapered barrel, Model 77 MK 2 .308 Win, why, Fair price, great accuracy, awesome customer service .

2-3/4” Security Six with the original grip. As much as the world hates that tiny grip, me and my stubby fingers love it. Small and handy, yet I shoot it as accurately as any full size handgun I’ve tried.

I own more Ruger brand firearms than any others so I would be hard put to it to choose my favorite.

I suppose if I just had to I'd go with my 5.25" MK.II bull-barrel pistol. I have more rounds through it than possibly all of my other Rugers combined.
