Rifle cartridges you dislike for no real reason

I listed the 270 win. I had one, bought it at Wal-Mart on clearance. At the same time I bought a 30-06 in the same rifle. $74 each what did I have to loose?
Gave the 270 to my nephew after asking him which rifle he wanted.
Mine weren't that cheap, but I bought the Axis models in .22.-250, .243, and 6.5 CM for a little over $100 each. Gave my dad the .243, sold the .22-250 and kept the 6.5 because the other rifles I currently own are 6mm or smaller. Stuck a $75 scope on the 6.5 and it's easily one of my more accurate rifles. I hate the rifle, but I can't imagine duplicating what it does for under $200 total.

I also have a 243 I bought for 184 minus 50 rebate. I want to keep it for a range gun and spare hunting rifle.

I am a big fan of the .243 win.
Its a dandy groundhog blaster.

Currently have two, a 700 ADL sitting in an HS stock w GreTan FP/ shroud. Wears a Leupold 4-12x AO Mark AR scope.

The othrr is my dads old staggerfeed Savage short action rebarreled by Mark Penrod back in early 80s. Its not been shot since the new bbl put on ( no bbl nut, has reg lug like a 700 ). Its a tank.

Dislike may be a little strong but:
1. 17 HMR - The first time I traveled with the group that I Prairie Dog hunt with they talked about this cartridge so much that I almost stopped and bought one. The wind was blowing where we went and they put their 17's away before an hour was passed.
2. The Weatherby's - Just because they are overblown.
3. The WSSM's - just because
4. The Creedmoors's - Because of the hype.
I feel the same way with the exception of the .257 Weatherby Magnum. I believe the 6.5 Creedmoor is an outstanding cartridge but will admit I’m tired of hearing about it, especially from people who have no idea how long cartridges in 6.5 caliber have been around. I’d own a Creedmoor I’m sure if I wasn’t already invested in the 6.5x55 which I’ve been shooting since before the Creedmoor was born. I can’t explain my dislike for the .17 HMR. I just don’t like it. I do really like the .22 WMR though.

The .270 Winchester. Doesn't have much bullet, does have too much hype. Probably good for up to deer or pronghorn size critters Probably more useful than I think.
.223 Remington or 5.56mm NATO, Had one long ago in the Marine Corps, too much hype and not enough actual power. Part of my dislike is aided by the Armalite designed rifle so associated with the round. I could like it better in a bolt rifle, but I have other things.
The .17 rimfire rounds simply have no purpose. No use for the .22 rimfire magnum either.
As a category, I see no use for 'belted magnums'. Possibly as they were so 'stylish' and 'in'. The Weatherby cartridges are much the same.

300 win mag..... I know it's fast, hits harder than 30-06 with similar bullets and kills most game more dead than your puny 243:rofl:... I just don't get why the extra recoil and muzzle blast is better? Somebody mentioned earlier that's what good recoil pads and muzzle brakes are for. Holy cow! How much louder do you want it?

Also, didn't realize how many folks disliked the 270. I am truly surprised by it.

Like I mentioned above, it isn’t the diameter or the case length. It was two very influential humans that turned me off of the “odd caliber bullet”.
One shot goats out west where most people don’t live, the other could not have a nice thread about any other caliber, or model of rifle, beside the .270 Winchester model 70.

Both of these things are now dead to me.

Ya know, I’ll add another.
The 30-378 Weatherby, in said Mark V or whatever. The best, most superlative cartridge ever thought up, by simply necking down another one.
The fastest thirty caliber bullet ever to miss a paper target.
The most finely crafted, weather resistant rifle, much too fragile to hunt with.
The most destructive, abdomen exploding, don’t bother trying to eat that one, cartridge any Michigander has ever Texas heart shot a deer with.
Why, it’s so good, you can hunt your neighbors property with it.:uhoh:

Thanks uncle William. Ruined Weatherbys for me too.

17hmr. Just a way to explode otherwise edible small game.

270 Winchester. A girls 30-06, no offense to the girls.

308 Winchester, the 30-06 wannabe

30-06, plain as an outhouse door

243, someone said its deadly on woodchucks, someone else said their wife mistook an elk for a woodchuck? Huh?

30 carbine. How many times have I heard how great it is compared to a 357 magnum? It's only following is with the military rifle crowd. My wife wants a carbine...

9mm. My wife even admits is a girls caliber. It's a 38 special with a tailwind. It's only merit is how many bullets it's guns hold. 40s&w should have killed it. Big bore starts with 4, plus mag capacity in a controllable round.

I shot one of those once. Without a brake it could literally break your shoulder I suppose. The one I shot had a brake and still had stiff recoil. Worst was the muzzle blast even with double ear pro.

The owner used it for 1,000 yard shooting. Barrel was toast after 800 rounds IIRC. He wanted to sell it for 1/2 price after the barrel was gone. Last I knew he still had it, but that was about twenty years ago

6.5 Swede-more??????

More what? Wannabe a Swede, can't quite get here.

.260 Rem, matches, exceeds the Swede, in readily available brass. The one Swede detractor

The 6.5 Man Bun is exceedingly appropriate. May be a good cartridge, but it looks weird. Just plain ugly.

A thirty is a thirty IMHO.

Id rather have a 7 mag or a .338 mag and skip the .300 winmag

If going w a .30 cal, will stay on the polite side w .308 or .30-06.

Had a .300 winmag, and it was fine, borderline annoying 20 yrs ago.
Proly a wimp now LOL

Am not a 1 rifle guy, so .300 winmag is off the list.

I used to have disdain for
300wm . All my friends had them and you weren't cool if you didn't have one. I made sure they knew I was killing as many or more deer than they were with my old 94. For 2 decades I killed all the deer I wanted with my 30-30. Or occasionally used 30-06 if I was hunting a longer range opportunity spot. I grew up on a 500acre farm and was friends with all the neighboring farms. I had no worries about being able to find a kill or track a wounded one and finish it.
Funny how circumstances can change your views. I don't have free range of a thousand acres anymore. Now days, if I shoot a deer and if it goes more than few hundred yds, there's a good chance it goes on land that I can't follow. I gave in about 10yrs ago and bought my first 300wm, Rem 700 Long Range. I haven't had to track any deer I've shot with it , haven't missed any, haven't lost any, not one. So I've warmed up to the 300wm enough that I bought another one. I still use my old 94, and 30-06, but the 300wm definitely has a permanent place in my gun cabinet now.

I don’t read gun magazines and I’m not on any other gun message boards so maybe I’m missing them, but where are these 6.5 creedmoor fanboys I hear so much about? I see 12 old guys complaining about 6.5 creedmoor fans for every actual 6.5 creedmoor fan.
Same here. I keep looking for them and the source of all this "hype" I keep hearing about but all I ever see and the ones that complain about them.

Kinda like with motorcycles. I've seen/heard hundreds of people who ride imports complain about Harley riders giving them a hard time but never actually see it happen.

Just because you haven't encountered it doesn't make it false. I've ridden a Goldwing for the last 20yrs and I've had plenty of negative reaction from Harley owners, but most of them were friends or coworkers, not strangers. It's off topic or I'd tell you about a couple funny ones.

As for the 6.5cm, most of the "fan boys" I've encountered are younger "tacticool" types. This caused me to also resist getting a 6.5cm for several years. But after looking objectively at the ballistics and the availability of rifles and ammo, I realized it was a sensible choice for my wife's entry into deer hunting. After getting her a T/C and liking it, I got a Savage 110 for myself. Still haven't hunted with it, but I will at some point.

Lol, ain't that the truth, I feel like 85% of the posts mentioning 6.5 Creed that I see on forums are whining about it's "hype" with the other 15% actual discussion of loads and whatnot. Still can't fathom why folks care.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist. Only that the complaining about it seems to far outweigh it. Friends ribbing friends doesn't count.

People must be encountering the frothy 6.5 fanboys places where I don't go. The local range? The gun shop? I shoot on my own property and learned to disregard random gun shop blathering decades ago.

This is my main complaint about the complainers. If you understood why and what-for the 6.5CM was developed, you wouldn't have posted that. The CM was intended to fit the AR10 platform, so the 6.5x55 is a non-starter. Plus its pressure is too low. The .260 has a too slow standard twist. It has a long shoulder and short neck. The 6.5CM was developed because it's easier to introduce a new cartridge than to ramp up the pressure on an old one, or change the twist of a less old one. While they were at it, they made the shoulder shorter and sharper and the neck longer. The 6.5CM is more efficient with the bullet intruding less into the powder space. It's designed as a long range target cartridge for long range target shooters. It does exactly what it was intended to do, shoot flatter than the .300WM with less recoil and blast. It was not intended to replace Dad's `06 as your favorite hunting cartridge. It makes a fine hunting cartridge but in that context, it does little or nothing that existing cartridges don't.

I don't know of a single cartridge that was designed for looks. Not even sure what that means, has to be the strangest complaint yet. Here it is on the far right compared to a bunch of other 6.5's.

I get the "like" version of this thread but I don't get this version? Maybe I do to much research before buying but I do not own a cartridge I do not like and I have never sold a rifle, let alone sold one due to a cartridge I did not like.

I have a moderate size collection of chamberings from some very old to very new, some very mainstream, some obsolete by most accounts. I have shot a fairly larger variety outside my collection too, having never said, "no" to trying a someone else's gun at the range.

So there are lots and lots of cartridges out there and some that I like enough to buy and some I do not like enough to buy. I have yet to run into one I dislike for no reason, or for a good or bad reason either.

I think its the "I'm better than you" mentality of trying to validate themselves. Kinda like the kids in school who made fun of someone else's sneakers. I just never have cared what anyone thought about my sneakers, my motorcycle, or my guns.
