Well this is the second time around for me with this "self quarantine ".my how time does not fly.
I thought that I have seen every you tube video about cap and ball guns,. Right when I thought that I got to the end of the internet I see 3 different paper cartridge kits that are available. How in the world did I miss these?
I did a search on here and didn't find anything on these kits. All 3 seem to be of the same design and close to the same prices.
Anyone have any experience with one of these kits?

I don't know about the "kits".... I just tapered a dowel and use my fingers for the rest......cost = less than 25 cents. Has worked perfectly for hundreds and hundreds of paper cartridges. It's not rocket science. A glue stick and a tapered dowel are all you really need.

A very smart gentleman on the Remington 1858 Forum did all the ground work using curling iron papers. They are durable, burn up great and are easy to work with. He didn't bother trimming the paper around the projectile, instead just pulled the paper over and twisted it leaving a little "tag" on top. It doesn't look quite as sexy as a trimmed one.....but it gives you a little "handle" to grab the cartridge out of the box when you're in the field. I do all of mine that way.

I kinda like the clean looking ones from the kits,,, the money I have been able to save that has been budgeted for caps that are not available can be redirected.

I bought the case former from Capandball a while back but haven't gotten off my lazy backside long enough to try it. But what I did do was roll some cartridges using paper coffee filters soaked in dissolved potassium nitrate granules (aka tree stump remover), using a dowel shaped to the dimension according to (if memory serves) one of the dualist1954 tutorials. These work well but the process is a bit time consuming, which won't be an issue once I'm retired. As I understand it from research, it was far more common during the era to obtain pistol ammunition in commercially made paper cartridge form than it was to haul a flask and loose RB's around.

I believe that at this point I have enough tools and knowledge to make a good run at it next time I build a batch.

I bought the Guns of the Old West kit. Made a few. They’re not so bad. I dipped the bullet (J&D) in melted SPG. It’s a tight fit to load in my Uberti 1860. I’ll probably mostly just use loose powder and round ball in the future or just use the kit to make powder only charges and load ball or bullet over that. You can easily make your own caps too. Pop can, punch, red ring caps (the plastic ones)...and a few other simple tools are all you need. There's a great write up on the "how to" over at the Colt Country forum. The gentleman did exhaustive research with lots of different materials and came up with a very simple and cheap method.

I have all the stuff to get started.
Already nitrate treated the raw coffee filters.
Found a bad a$$ heavy duty 3/4" circle paper cutter on Amazon. I can get @ 32 circles from one folded coffee filter.
Got the glue sticks.
Just watching the tracker for the 44,36 and 31 cal former kit from Guns of The West. It should be here Monday.

One more day and my paper cartridge formers will be here.

I went into town the other day and bought some rolling papers, it was an odd feeling. Haven't done that since the 70s. I quit being a hippie a very long time ago.

Anyway I am eager to get started on these paper cartridges..

After these I will do the wooden cartridge holders...

OMG,, I love it.
MY GUNS OF THE WEST paper cartrige formers came in. I had been bird dogging the mail box all day and finally the mail man showed up. I had everything laid out and was ready. These are soooo simple to make, I bet I had my first one put together before the Mail Man got back out on the highway.

I had ordered just the former for the 44, 36 and 31.
This one is 44 RB. 20220124_170500.jpg 20220124_170433.jpg 20220124_172515.jpg

Thank you. I was just so excited to get something in this black powder world that finally works without a bunch of trial and error..
I will dip'm tomorrow.

II will say that I like the nitrated coffee filters better than the cigarette papers.

These are loaded with 25g fff. I used the powder measure that is built into the set for each caliber...
I sat here tonight and made 40 cartrige tubes and wilload them up tomorrow.

It is going to be sooooo convenient not having to pour powder into each cylinder when shooting.

That plastic green box is for modern ammo. These round ball loads are short and hard to get the out..

I saw a video how to make those little wooden 6 shot cartrige boxes.. that is on my to do list.

The kits are neat, but aren’t needed. Here’s my setup:

Homemade tapered dowel and hair curling papers. Works great, fast and easy to make up a few dozen cartridges in little time. Shoot clean and reliable.
