I have some wear on my cylinder on my 1873 .45LC SAA. Is setting the timing something i can do myself? I have replaced springs and parts on my own before but never messed with the timing. Looking to see if i can tackle it or should I take it to a gunsmith. Are there any videos or such available.

thanks,

If the wear on your cylinder is a line between the cylinder notches, that's probably normal unless there are other signs of timing issues. Here's a decent video that describes how to check the timing on your revolver.

Note that he recommends a competent gunsmith if you do have timing problems.

When I found this video, there were others in the queue.

What exactly makes you think your SAA is out of time? Is it just the bolt dropping early? Or does it over or under rotate?

Not so much as i think its out of timing but have a lot of cylinder wear prior to locking up. Looks like the lock bar comes up early and scraps into position to lock the cylinder. It functions and fires fine.

Hold the revolver upside down, cock it slowly, watch the bolt as it cycles, it should drop into the beginning of the leade into the locking notch. Full lock up should happen when the hammer reaches full cock notch. Some revolvers, such as Ruger new models, drop the bolt war early causing that really obnoxious wear ring on the cylinder. If yours is a true Colt clone it shouldn't drop the bolt before the leade in cuts. Main thing on the timing is does the cylinder lock up at the full cock notch?
