Anybody use an Old Timer 152 "sharp finger" for a field dressing / skinning knife?

I've been using one with a USA blade for quite a few years now. For me, I find that nothing compares to unique profile of this knife for use on game. I know that the carbon steel leaves them prone to rust but if taken care of, they take an awesome edge, and with their thick spine, hold it quite well.

Just curious how popular this knife is or if I am the exception.

My grandpa was a farmer and butchered his own meat . I remember him having a sharp finger . I use to have one also as a teenager , but I lost it many decades ago . Wish that I still had it .

I have been using the Old Timer Sharp Finger knives for decades for gutting deer. I still do but added a Havalon Barracuda knife for gutting, & skinning deer. They did good on several deer last deer season.

Like like the regular blade without the guthook.

Have had one for many years. Back when I carried sheath knives it was one of my favorites. Seemed it got used more once I got home for skinning deer than for field dressing so I just quit carrying it. Was a little wide for removing the anus in the field as compared to a Muskrat Skinner, Trapper or my new favorite a Slimline Trapper. You gotten my curiosity raised, I need to go up and go thru the drawers in the spare bedroom and make sure it's still there!

I have one and use it for small game. I used it to gut 1 deer and wasn't a fan. I like my Outdoor Edge Swingblade for that. I know everyone says you don't need a big knife for gutting but I like a longer blade to keep my hands a little cleaner and away from possible broadheads. I also didn't like how pointy it was.

I've never used the sharpfinger on game, but I used my buck 110. For gutting and skinning a deer, the 110 will work, but I didn't like how pointy it was. So I'd guess I wouldn't like the sharpfingers point.

I carry an Old-timer stockman's always and have actually HAD to use it to dress a wild hog .. not the best choice for sure. However, the Sharpfinger, as cool as it looks, isn't much better IMO. I like a folding lock-blade knife with a 2 1/2" to 3" blade to gut, skin, and cut up a deer. Nothing larger is really necessary. My new favorite is a Camillus with a 2 1/2" blade. I have gutted, skinned, and cut up 2 deer with it and it is still razor sharp.

A sharpfinger was my first real knife. I found it on the side of the road about 30 years ago. My grandparents lived back a side road near an old country church that was on the main road. I would ride my bike to the playground and they could watch me from their front porch. There was a creek to catch crawfish there too. Anyways I rode up there one day and saw leather. Picked up a very used sharpfinger in its sheath. Have been using that knife ever since. Love it. Have a new one still in the package in case this one ever goes rogue or runs away.

What knife do you like for skinning?

I use a Buck 103 that one of the employees replaced the nylon handle with an antler then decided he didn't like it. He asked me to include it in a garage sale but I bought it instead. It has given me good service. And before you say it... My sister in law made a combination sheath that holds both knives. No muss, no fuss.

I have one too. My Dad bought it for me when I was 12 at a yard sale in GA. I never used it on an animal, but swear the next critter I kill will get the treatment with it. I lashed a piece of 550 cord through the handle lanyard hole. It is razor sharp.

I appreciate everyone's replies, I'm glad to hear that others share similar admiration for this oddball blade.

I still have one, I bet I haven’t picked it up in over a decade and it’s been probably 35 years since I skinned something with it.

I always thought they looked cool.

My hunting bud runs a Sharpfinger.
An old one, probably a family heirloom.
Works well for him.

Been using a Jeff White Bush 3 last couple yrs ( shot bows w Jeff back on 80s ). Its scary sharp but a little big. Handle is straighter than i like/ used to. Ran a kit drop point for a couple decades I rebuilt. Japanese stainless blade, was darn good.

Used a Benchmade 530 a couple times before I broke it at work. Was EDC for 12 yrs or so.

Have a brand new Behring EDC technical.
Hope to blood it with a trad bow kill.....if I ever get my new bow limbs.

May order a Jeff White blade and finish it with stag.
