Your Favorite Ruger & Why

Picked up this New Model Single Six, 1973, recently. My favorite, because it replaces a single six that was sold when my father passed 14 yrs ago. My love and interests of guns have changed a lot over the last 10 yrs and I’ve been slowly trying to purchase some firearms my sister sold off from his estate. Guns like this just bring me joy and good memories.

Well my favorite Ruger is my half lug gp100 5 inch! Why? Because it’s so frickin cool! CLASSIC lines. Wore it to the store to get pancake mix this morning
Rides great in the Kramer horsehide If I’m honest I don’t like the smooth stocks but I’m not going to change them.

I have others as well. Really need to take more pics. Not pictured is a late '50s vintage Single Six, 2 3/4 Security Six in stainless, '80s ROA and a 9mm LCRx.

My favorite Ruger Revolver is my Super Red Hawk in 44 Magnum. My favorite Ruger auto is my Stainless 22 target pistol. Why??? Just because they shoot well.

I really need to learn how to post pictures!

Although I have several Ruger single actions, my favorite is the SRM 357 Maximum. I prefer 7 1/2" barrels, and as far as I know Rust doesn't make a 357 mag in that length. I've found my 210 grain Max load and my 158 grain 357 mag load shoot to the same place at 25 yards, so usually carry the SRM with magnums.

My Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull (though I only shoot 45 Colts) with its Wolff springs, a shim kit, and Rough Country rear sight is so fun to shoot. The trigger is smooth as can be with no stacking. It is my avatar.

5" Stainless Redhawk 41 Mag. Because its super well balanced and looks like a super model.

I say this delicately and regretfully. I dislike most Ruger products. I love the thought of them, and I have owned a few but they never seem to be quite the gun I want. I currently own 1 Ruger. It’s a single six 9” and I like it, but still it wouldn’t be a huge ordeal for it to get vamoosed. Had a few 10/22s and sold them all. Had a standard 9shot heel release (mk1 to most folks) and after disassembly and reassembly I gave it to my dad who would never disassemble it. Kinda had that intention when I bought it but really wanted to buy my own and have fun with him when I gave it to him. Had 2 brand new gp100s with factory trashed barrels. Eventually I will find a No.1 and hopefully a Deerfield carbine, but with a bad taste for the company I’m not going out of my way to find those guns. I know Ruger is a solid company with a good reputation but I think maybe Ruger just isn’t for me.

I need to find a Bearcat before I swear Ruger off completely.

I've owned and enjoyed several Ruger revolvers over the years. Right now I have a 4" Security Six .357, a .22 cal. Single Six and this Bisley Black Hawk .45 Colt. Had it overhauled by Dave Clements who worked his magic on it. He cut the barrel back to 5 1/2" and installed a set of SK Custom Grips burl mesquite grips. Was always an accurate revolver, but after Clements' work, it handles and shoots like a charm.

Until I find a 4.6" barrel Single Six that I'm willing to pay for, my current favorite Ruger revolver is my little Shopkeeper. It gets more frequent use than my 9.5" Single Six or my 6" GP100.

I took the scope off my Single Six and added Williams Firesights yesterday to make better use of that long barrel. Then I took it shootin'.

I'd say my Single Six is making a comeback.

My first Ruger was a 3 screw Blackhawk in 41mag that I purchased on my 21st birthday from a local pawn shop. I shot yha bajeezers out of it. I hunted with it for several years as well. The downside was that cylinder pin release that kept coming unscrewed. I made a long stalk on a deer, and when I drew, and started to cock the hammer, the cylinder locked up due to the pin falling out.

I swapped it off at a gun show for a Redhawk and never looked back. That RH has been toted many a mile, taken a literal ton of feral hogs and several deer. I have matching 44, and 45 Colt but the 41 is my favorite.

Throwing a rifle in, I picked up a M77 Varminter in 280 Rem. My intention was to build an Ackley Improved. I called Ruger to find out about when it was built and after checking the SN, found out they only made a limited number in that configuration. So it has been resting comfortably in the safe till one of my grandsons acquires it.
