Hi guys. I'm a powder burner from the "other" side of the forum. In light of the fact that powder burning supplies are kind of hard to find, I was thinking about an air rifle to allow me to keep in practice in my backyard.

Quiet is the biggest requirement. Accuracy is probably next. I also don't want to spend a fortune so any of those PCP Chicom sniper rifles are out as far as I am concerned. My last air rifle was when I was a kid and was a pneumatic pump gun.

Can you make some suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Range was locked down early into Covid, so I shopped and bought an air venturi V10 pistol and Crosman challenger pcp rifle. Already had a daisy/avanti 753 rifle. Can recommend the three pellet guns for quiet and accuracy; just my imho. I shoot them in the house, when the wife is at work.

it will help if you can give a range of price you want to spend.

Oh, right. I would probably be willing to spend up to $500. Counting optics of course.

Just take the plunge to PCP. The closest thing you can get to a decent rimfire.

I went PCP because of ammo shortages and prices too. They are quite addictive and now I have two and looking at a third.

Both my $300 (with a hand pump) .22 PCP and my more expensive Talon P are every bit as accurate as most .22s, More accurate than many. Plenty of power too. I purchased my Talon P in .25 specifically for pests, but it turned out to be great fun at longer ranges.

I have gotten to the point where I don't even miss conventional firearms.

I don't have to be close to a decent rimfire. I have decent rimfires. What is your $300 gun? And what is the decibel level. Quiet is key. Thanks.

I bought a Hatsun 95 one year ago. I also bought a nice Hawke scope. The pair was within your budget.

It is a .22 caliber which I like.
I can shoot your thumbnail at 20yds.
It's not real quiet, but it is small game power.

I am not an expert, just a happy owner.
Some of the regulars on the air rifle page can suggest exactly what you need.

I do recommend the pellet pen in the middle photo. It is an awesome ammo holder.

Nice looking rig.

Are you thinking .177 then? I think they are quieter in the same gun when compared to their .22 sibling.
Do you want sights on it?

I would look around Pyramid Air, they are my go to for air stuff. Also, under specs for each rifle they give it a sound "level" of 1-5. Not real scientific if you wanted dB's but is a start.

I would suggest one of the big European makers (and made in the EU). Been around for a long time and make amazing stuff. I bought less $$ air guns over the years but they are almost all gone and replaced with the European ones now. Not saying that there are not other nice options.

I tried the PCP thing and it was not for me.

I want something that will shoot accurately to 30 yards which I can do in my backyard. I will be shooting target type stuff so I don't care if it's 22 or 177. Obviously, I don't want to disturb the neighbors. All of these lots are 1/2 acre so the houses aren't that close together, but still quiet is better than not.

Also my DB test was indoors.
Order from Krale
Weihrauch HW30 S (krale.shop)
They are in the Netherlands and it will cost about 50-60 bucks to ship and will be at your door faster then if you ordered domestically (I KID YOU NOT) and will be cheaper all around.
They are currently out of stock but they get stock quickly and often.

Why not just by an R7 here in the states?

You can and I have (HW30) but I have found Krale to be both cheaper and far faster then buying domestically. I know that doesn’t make sense but it truly works out that way. Last purchase I made was was from Krale. It was at my door in 2 days. I have bought from AOA numerous times and they are a week or two easy.

Well, that's interesting. They must beam them over.

My $300 dollar PCP is an Umarex Origin. I think you can now get them with or without the hand pump.
I have not measured the decibels, but it is quiet enough that my wife doesn't know when I am shooting it, and she has very sensitive hearing.
The sound of the pellet hitting the plywood backstop at 25 yards is louder than the shot.
The hammer spring is also adjustable. Crank it down and the gun is even quieter and more shots per charge. But even at full power, it is quiet enough to not disturb the neighbors and very accurate.

A good while back I bought a Sig MCX which is a PCP that feels a lot like an AR. Semi, 30 shot. They run about $325 or so. The pump if you want a good workout can be had for around $50 or so. Me being far too lazy, I bought a compressor. They run a few hundred and too me was well worth it as like I said I am lazy. For me the compressor was handy as I also have a couple paintball markers. Bought them to use to run off unwanted critters on the property. With the compressor I can fill the bottles for the air rifle and the markers both.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I am used seeing these things priced in the thousands.

For noise reduction you can get a moderator, which is pretty much a suppressor but for air rifles only. You may want to research that some because that may influence your decision quite a bit.

Rather not go there.

I'm thinking .177 or .22 makes no big difference for what I want to do. I know noise varies between brands of guns, but whether the smaller caliber is quieter, I haven't got a clue. It wouldn't surprise me. As far as PCP, I am ambivalent. The extra gear seems a bit much for a backyard gun, but I have no experience to go on.

So far, looking at the pictures you all have posted on this thread, I like the looks of the HW30/R7. When I get a moment, I plan on taking a look at the PCP guns you mentioned as well. Thanks for the suggestions so far. They gave me a couple of trails to follow.
