RIfle Cartridges That Should Die, Rifle Cartridges That Should Live On Forever?

You know, I don't own a 6.5 Creedmore nor do I plan to ever get one. But, the amount of sheer venom I read about this specific caliber on every gunboard I frequent says to me it's going to be around for a very long time.

(laughing)

If they don't make new versions of old ones to attract whipper snappers into to the sport what will happen to the common crowd. 357,45 colt,30-30, 308,45-70 or die. Ha, take that

I'm not sure if "should" is the right word but I'll play along.

1. 30 AR
2. Most of the WSM's
3. All of the WSSM's
4. Most of the Nosler's

There are probably a few more that slip my mind at present.
These are good cartridges but they don't have a lot of support. None of my gun buddies have or want a 30AR. None have a WSSM. A few have some of the various WSM's, including me. None have any of the Nosler's.
Heck, the 30 ar is what got me into ar's. Good old Remington liars. I can still picture it on the back of that magazine." The power of the .308 in an ar 15"

I'm honestly surprised no one has revived it...

... or necked it down to a 6.5mm at least.

There are other very similar cartridges available with similar oversize bolt extensions, they just haven't gained any widespread notoriety. Olympic Arms had the 300 OSSM which was based on a WSSM case. They went out of buissiness in 2017 but Dtech still produces uppers in the same caliber as well as one with a modified shoulder angle. They also make a 6.5 WSSM and 358 WSSM

Mad Dog Weopons Systems make a 30 caliber based on a 6.5x47 case called 30 sabercat as well as a 6.5 called 6.5 Timberwolf. I have their 358 cartridge which is called 358 yeti and I love it. It shoots a 180 grain 358 bullet at 2500-2600 fps which is way more power than any standard size ar15 cartridges.

That would be good. I like good odd ones you can't buy at the TG&Y

The problem, well at least one of many, with 30 Remington AR is the rim diameter. Remington decided to enlarge the rim diameter from the parent 284 Winchester and 450 Bushmaster, that the 30 RAR case is based on. It is literally the only cartridge in the entire SAAMI specifications that uses that rim diameter (.492). The cartridge would have had a better chance if they has stayed with the same rim diameter as 284 Winchester (.473) which is a standard and the same as 308 Win and 30-06 and a heap of other cartridges.

If they has also released a few other common calibers based on the case so that there would be more than one cartridge that could utilize the proprietary upper, barrel nut, bolt, and barrel extension that would have help too. Imagine how much more potent 450 Bushmaster would be in a 30 RAR upper where the bolt and barrel could support 55 ksi of 30 RAR instead of the 38.5ksi or the current 450 Bushmaster.

Not to mention Remington only really supported the cartridge for two years of making guns. That is not long enough. Despite the internet hype of the overnight success of 6.5 Creedmoor, Hornady nurse that cartridge along for nearly a decade before it took off into the "overnight success" it has become.

And whether you think the 30 RAR cartridge should be dead or not it is about as dead as a modern rifle cartridge can be. Remington is the only company that made rifles or ammo for it. Now with the breakup of the old Remington Outdoor Company it is almost certain we will never see another new production gun chambered in the cartridge. Rem Arms LLC is run by a super FUDD and will likely never touch an AR again (at least under current leadership) and it is unlikely that Vista will continue to support the cartridge and they are the only one currently with tooling to make 30 RAR brass. That said there is still one load listed on the new Vista run Remington ammunition website so there is some hope for those of us that still use this dead cartridge.

I have a spare barrel, dies, and sufficient brass to last a life time with care. <- I am that one fool...

That dream also lives on. Several years ago some guys made a cartridge for the AR10 that they called 45 Raptor, which is basically a 460 Smith and Wesson with a rimless .473” case head. Starline makes brass for it and you use 460 dies and load data.

Fast forward a few years and the guys at MDWS realized it would also fit in an AR15 using the same bolt head that they make all their other .473 bolt head cartridges with so they started making bolts and barrels chambered in 45 raptor with a safe pressure limit of 60,000 psi. To differentiate them they named the AR15 version 45 Vrap.

if you want one just send them an email and they will build it.

Imagine hunting grizzly bear with your 16” AR15. Gives me goose bumps.

I prefer to not be where grizzly bears or python's can get me. But if I were my marlin 45- 70 with the 400 gr cast load would be with me. Good info though.

I have an oft derided .458 Winchester for that scenario (which will never happen unless im both amazingly luck, and amazingly unlucky at the same time....)

I’d be fine with .22lr, 300 BLK, .30-06, and 50 BMG. The only other rifle cartridge I shoot on a regular basis is 450 BM and I could get by without that one.

If everything else went by the wayside you’d still have like 90% or more of the utility of all the rifle cartridges combined covered with those 4.
