Effective range for 6.5 Grendel?

I'm between Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids. The 25 WSSM is an intriguing option and would have more than enough power for deer. Wiki says identical ballistics to the 257 Ackley Improved which was his favorite all around cartridge. Might be a fun thing to try once I put aside enough money for one.

I'm in Brainerd, formerly Bemidji. I looked really hard at the 358 wssm but I ended up doing a 358 yeti as it was about half the cost and easier to come by brass. Recently I've been thinking about contacting them to see if he wants to do a 338 WSSM if I get a reamer made, but I'm holding out hoping to find a DPMS G2 hunter in 338 Federal.

Lots of considerations these days when it comes to availability of components and caliber choices. 338 Federal is a great round. I had a Rem 7400 rebarrelled in that. The ballistics are surprising and it's absolutely lethal.

Wow. I live in Buffalo but I am from Detroit Lakes and hunt up there. I have a cabin (RV) on Shell Lake and my brother lives by Osage.
I have hunted with an AR but for several reasons now hunt with a Tikka T3 in 7-08. In my experience at long range bullet performance becomes critical. The bullet has to reliably expand and have enough energy to damage tissue regardless of caliber. Since a deers doesn't have a proper shoulder joint I prefer a heart lung shot. Not deer or anything else goes far without a heart. I have shot all kinds of rounds. I prefer the 7-08 because I have had a damaged shoulder for years. When it was really bad I used an AR in 223 and killed a 14 pt buck weighing close to 300 lbs. One shot to the heart. I switched to a 7-08 when I got a little better because of the balance between power and recoil. I find the Tikka is light enough and short enough to be easy to handle but heavy enough to for recoil. Also I find that on a stand a bolt action rifle is much more handy, slim and quiet. I can easily and quicky switch from shooting right handed to left when a deer shows up to the right and close. I have thought about a Grendel or 30 ARC as a backup gun though.

Well howdy neighbor! I'm on Toad so it doesn't get much closer than that. I made a few hikes up the mountain last fall preparing for an elk hunt but I found out I should have done a few more.

Being on Shell during the summer I sometimes eat at the place on the North end of big Toad and go to Toad Lake store for burger night sometimes in the summer. I also am a member of the Height-of-Land gun club. Great area.
