What revolver do you use for home defense?

My HD revolver has for the last 25+ years beed a model 15 police trade in my uncle the cop got for me through the Ft Worth PD. Its one of my most favorite guns too. And it only cost me $200 at the time.

Kept a loaded security six for years in the drawer. Now, with my adopted son I keep a star bm. He can't muster the strength to pull the slide.

My wife keeps a S&W 686+ in a safe beside her bed. Its loaded with Underwood 38+p 158gr JHPs. I tested them using the same set up "Gun sam" uses on youtube and they worked VERY well. At 10 yards they expanded to .65 (5 shot average) and penetrated 16". Thats through 3" pack of bologna covered in 4 layers of denim backed by 3/8 fiber board. They are just below magnum recoil though, not unpleasant but snappy.

Model 10 loaded on the night stand, Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight pump 12 gauge in closet.

I don't use a revolver for HD. I have a short barrel 12 GA shotgun loaded with #4 Buckshot for that job.

Around the house, in daily carry, it's a Smith M-60, .357 with a 3" bbl. We're on a farm here, and my daily carry rig is an OWB at the 4:00 position. My loads at home are cast LSWC's (Lyman's 358156 GC) loaded to the old "FBI" level, (~950 fps). This is an authoritative load with moderate recoil but still allows good follow up shots if necessary.

On the night stand, I usually have a 4" M-66 Smith in .357, loaded with Hornady's 158 gr XTP's loaded to the same "FBI" velocity level. My wife BTW, keeps a Glock 23 on her side of the bed.

We live in a 2 story farm house, with an alarm system, and a very protective German Shorthaired Pointer asleep on the landing. Response time for county police hereabouts runs to about 30 minutes...

In my nightstand safe I keep a S&W 327 Night Guard loaded with SD .38 rounds. There is also a flashlight and two speedloaders. That is my primary HD gun because it’s the one nearest me at night and my wife can shoot it very well.
There is also a Glock 45 in front room and a Mossberg 500 in the spare room.
It wouldn’t bother me at all to only have revolvers because I am more comfortable with them and a much better shot with them. But, I am also pragmatic. A G45 with 3 spare mags is a comfort when someone knocks at the door after dark.

As far as speedloaders go I have found 5 shot versions for J frame S&W revolvers to be rather small and inconspicuous when carried in my left side pants pocket.

If one is overly concerned about concealing a speedloader, there are always flat speed strips as member defjon mentioned in his post #98.

currently a Ruger LCR 327. Loads are the Hornady 32 H&R flex-tip.

The only revolver I use for home defense,,,
Is a 3" Model 36 stashed in a plastic bag under my bathroom sink.

Honestly though,,,
The reason for the choice,,,
Was because it fit inside the zip-lock baggie.

My other 2 home defense guns are (they just changed a bit):

A CZ-75B in 9mm located in a nylon holster,,,
Screwed to the wooden rail of my bed,,,
Right where my hand falls naturally.

My EDC Ruger LCP n a De Santis Pocket Shot holster,,,
Usually sitting on the small table beside my TV watching chair.

The revolver I keep for the wife in case she ever needed a gun is a S&W 681 and a speedloader of 158 grain .38 next to it and wearing Crimson Trace laser grips. She’s not into guns and needs something simple.

For me, a S&W 5906. I like a safety and a mag disconnect on a gun that my kids could conceivably get their hands on if the figured out the combination to the pistol safe.

I have one of those also (and a couple of single sevens). I don’t think I would ever have the need to use the fire arm. The warning system does double duty as home defense also.

Two, actually.
My wife has a Ruger SP101 she confiscated from me after I returned home from the 1998 NPSC. I won the service gun aggregate and was awarded the bobbed hammer 2” 101. She promptly pick it up, opened the cylinder, checked out the trigger pull and said “this one is mine!” She keeps it nearby when I’m vacant from the premises. Keeps it loaded with some 125gr +P Ga Arms ammo I got as a door prize at a match... she shot magnums once and said “too much”.

I keep a recently acquired Taurus 856 with some near +P 148gr PC wadcutters running 800fps (chrono’d). Both have a pair of speedloaders handy...

Correction, mine is a 1922 Colt Army Special, not Official Police.

The upper left 4” barreled revolver is my edc. The others can fill in but usually opt to stay home with herself. The upper right is my preferred substitute. The picture with the longer barreled revolvers are ones I take out for hunting or target practice.
