New gun for wife

If we allow plastic frame guns, a Beretta Px4 Compact may be an option too. It is the best in class for recoil control. But without that, it's just compact versions of Beretta 92, SIG P229, and CZ PCR.

A clever husband might want to let her look at Walther Q4 Steel frame or SIG P320 AXG. They are not super small, but they exude quality and that can win her over if he plays the cards right. But they are too heavy to carry and they cost a lot.

We are planning to go next week on the range to try some guns, unfortunately, our range don' have a big selection.
Your two choices listed above are not common in the US, and you're probably not going to see them at the range. Glock, M&P, SIG P320, Beretta 92, maybe a CZ, are much more likely to found at the range.

If "used" is on the table, S&W 5906. They do seem to be getting a tad pricey though.

I had Sig P320 M17, she did not like it, actually, me ether just sold recently.

I don’t know where in IL you reside but even a short road trip could be far less expensive than purchasing something she doesn’t like.

If used is an option, the various S&W 3rd generation pistols seem like a good possibility.

My wife has CT, she shoots her Sig p365 and my Ruger Security 9 well, have her try those at the range, neither is overly expensive and you can get 15-17 rounds in the sec 9, or 10 to 15 in the sec 9 compact with different mags.

I have short fingers and wide hands, and the sec 9 fits me like a glove, wife was really surprised when she shot it how well it handled - recoil is often helped by ensuring the gun fits the shooter..
