Squirrel calls

I use mine when a squirrel has hidden itself behind a tree. I wait about 5 min, then give a bark or two. Most times the squirrel will peak around the tree to investigate. You have to be ready for a quick shot cause once the squirrels sees you he will duck behind the tree again. Sometimes having a buddy to hunt with helps. One guy circles around the tree while the other waits for the squirrel to show itself.

I have one of those but it seldom does anything. The best I've seen is a metal disc with a hole in the center like a washer but quite a bit thicker. You hold it between your teeth and can simulate a young squirrel screaming. Other squirrels show themselves to see what's going on. It works best near a den tree.

I’ve used the disc type and the type in the OP.

Don’t really know if they ever worked or not because i never noticed a difference between using them and not using them at all.

I had some luck by making a clicking noise with my mouth. Sucking on the roof of your mouth and making a loud tsk tsk sound.

Rub a pair of quarters together. There's a special way to do it, it's on U-toob. Just sit there, and draw them within range.

I use a Lohman bellows call (bark call) and a reed type young squirrel distress call. The bark gets them sounding off when they are there, but you can't see them. The reed call will get them whipping their tails and seriously barking. They work and I have killed a bunch of squirrels using them.

I have played with the “primos squirrel buster” quite a bit at our house. This time of year I can see them in the trees 100 + yards away, it was fun playing with it and seeing how they reacted to different sounds. They really seem to be attracted to the little squeak it makes.

Best buddy is one you don't have to take turns shooting with.

My son and I hunted squirrels with bows. I told him about calling squirrels and he didn't believe me. Next hunting trip I called a squirrel out of a nest. He said it was pure coincidence. I told him to pick another nest. Lather, rinse repeat. After several more he believed me.

I have a few, never really seems to work, I make a call with my mouth and it seems to do better. Sometimes I'll try the 2 quarter thing, I'll put some rocks in my pocket to.

When I hunted, I carroed a ball of string. When a squirrel wanyed to play hide n seek, I would tie the string to a bush on one side of the tree, then walk directly past the tree anput 15'-25' and sit down.

Wait a couple of minutes then jerk the string. Squirrel will come sround the tree. Have the gun in your shoulder ready....

Never tried calling them, always walked'm up

I have the squirrel call that hunter’s specialties makes. I’ve been able to get them moving with it but I don’t think it’s all that squirrelly. I’d be interested to try something of higher quality.

I have most of the ones mentioned or something close and a few not mentioned yet.

Most important thing is to be where the squirrels are. You can't call one out or around the tree no matter how good you if three aren't any in there. If you've got that much master you are already in the college level squirrel hunting education. Pro tip: KNOW YOUR TREES and you'll know your squirrels.

Couple of the first calls I ever used was just a couple quarters. One with your index finger wrapped around it like the head of a drum and then knock it with the edge of the other one.

Second one is "knocking" a walnut gun stock with an acorn.

Last squirrel hunt tip I picked up from watching squirrels react to a cat on the ground while I was deer hunting and it went on ALL AFTERNOON. Started with one squirrel barking at the cat and ended when I GAVE UP and left with ever squirrel from mile around in the tree tops barking at that stubborn cat playing dead on the ground for hours with out moving. If you KNOW you have squirrels in the woods, set up a stuffed cat on the ground, climb a tree and watch until you have a limit of squirrels in range before you start shooting them.

I've done the string thing and it works.
These days I prefer to hang my jacket
or a bandana/ handkerchief on a bush
and slowly make my way around the
other side. They'll usually watch where
you hung the cloth in the bushes

I sometimes use a 5/16" bolt with a washer to call squirrels out after sitting quietly for about 15 min. I just scrape the washer against the threads of the bolt to imitate a squirrel chewing on a nut. It sometimes gets them looking for the source of the chewing and I believe the noise is like a "all Clear" sound that the danger has passed.
