I see both Hodgdon H110 and Lil’Gun in the list from Hodgdon’s own website. Of course, H110 is famous as the original powder for the 30 Carbine.

Others as good or better?

Accurate 1680 and Alliant 300MP are also good choices for the 22 Hornet. Primer choice and charge weights (down to 0.1gr. Increments) are important to accuracy in the small Hornet case. I prefer to avoid full power loads to maximize life of the thin Hornet cases.

All I have are CCI magnum small rifle primers and Nosler brass. I’m out of Lil’Gun but I do have H110.

Seems like any mag pistol powder would be right at home. Accurate #9 IMR 4227 or shooter's world heavy pistol. Lots of choices.

If you have any CCI 500 primers (Small Pistol), they can be used with the Hornet. See Speer's online data for loads.

IMO, magnum small rifle primers are a poor choice for the Hornet.

Very small case capacity, plus I don't recall ever seeing any published 22 Hornet load utilizing magnum small rifle primers. Study of the cartridge suggests that primers with the lowest power levels will yield the best results in the Hornet.

My Hornet likes 1680 and a small pistol primer, many folks like Lil' Gun in the Hornet, swear by it.

I have used a lot of powders in .22 Hornet, as far as recommendations, there is Lilgun then the others.

As far as I’m concerned they might as well change the name to “22 Hornet powder”, it’s the only caliber I use that powder for.

I use W296/H110 the most in my 22 Hornet but I do like 1680 in some other small cartridges that I also use W296/H110.

Several versions ago of the Speer reloading manual, they recommended the use of small pistol primers vs small rifle.

I’d recommend using the primer your data recommends until you get a feel for how the particular primer is working.

A lower power primer will upset the cartridge less and let the push come from the powder and not the primer. You observe the same principle in small primer 308 brass.
I have read at least a 100 times how H110 should be used almost exclusively with magnum primers. I’ve also read the same about Lil’Gun tho not as often. True or false?

I usually always start ball powders with a mag. I guess tac does better with regular.

After trying just about everything I use Remington 6 1/2 primers for Hornet, I get the best results with them.

BTW, I noticed this on Hodgdon’s website:
In addition, Lil’ Gun has many magnum pistol applications and is a superb choice for reloading the 22 Hornet.

I have both a 22-Hornet and a 22-K Hornet rifle and and use nothing but Hodgdon's Lil-Gun in both. Never had a need to look for a different powder after using Lil-gun.

Well, if we're going to quote powder makers...

"Alliant 2400® Smokeless magnum handgun powder
Legendary for its performance in .44 magnum and other magnum pistol loads. Originally developed for the .22 Hornet, it's also the shooter's choice for .410 bore."

2400 is all I used way back when I bothered reloading the Hornet. That was a long time ago, though. My fingers don't move quite as well as they used to so I don't bother with anything under .30rifle/.32pistol these days.

I have read is several places Lil'Gun has breath new life into the .22 Hornet. A shooting buddy of mine swears by it for velocity and accuracy. The Rem 6 1/2 primer is a good choice for the 22 Hornet.

First, all I have for small primers, both pistol and rifle, is CCI magnum rifle primers

Second, of the 2 powders I mentioned for the 22 Hornet, H110 and Lil’Gun, I have H110 but no Lil’Gun. (I have added my email address on countless websites to be notified when Lil’Gun shows up)

Well then, you will have to use the H110 you have and the SPM primers.

Good luck finding a good accurate load. I don't think it will be too hard, you got this...
