Hi

I have a pretty basic Remington 1911R1 in 45 ACP for a few years now, I am seriously considering an upgrade to a stainless steel model, with a classic touch (not some fancy or too modern looking gun). Or at the very least something with a better fit and finish.

My playground is pretty limited to range shooting, no EDC or hunting allowed here.

Would you share your experience or point me to reviews please ?

There's a wide array of stainless 1911 pistols available--it's a robust market. At least in the US. What is available in France, I'd be less sure of.

If available, I'd check on Dan Wesson 1911 models (DW is owned by CZ of Czechia, so may be available). Kimber makes some decent stainless 1911 models. SAI (Springfield Armory Incorporated) has some good stainless offerings, some of which may be made by Tisas of Türkyie. There are so many choices.

I'm not a big fan of "bells and whistles" like extended levers or flared mag wells, nor "ambi" safeties. And see little use for those as range guns, either. But, I'm biased in this from competition shooting.

Here are the brands selling 1911 here, sorted by availability :
Tanfoglio
Taurus
S&W
Ruger
Sig Sauger
SAI
Kimber

The Ruger SR1911 stainless looks good in pictures, it's in my price range. The SAI 1911 Mil-spec is surprisingly cheaper, I will definitely look into it, thanks for the heads up :)

That's a good list. I've had mixed results with Kimber, very binary, either love or hate, and right away. The Taurus 1911s are tainted by my experience with the 945 and similar "not 1911" autos they make. The oxide SIGs have been interesting, but nothing that have called to be to "buy me now"--and I've not seen a SIG 1911 in stainless.

For me for some reason the Kimbers are just very comfortable, fit well and seem to have a natural point of aim.
Maybe I am just lucky and very similar in build to the guy that designed them. Lol

I have the stainless Taurus 1911 with the rail on the frame. That gun is very smooth. Slick action, smooth cycling, pretty good trigger. One drawback however is that the rail makes it excessively heavy.
If my grandson hadn't already laid claim to it I would trade it off for one without the rail.
He has been shooting that gun since he was 8 years old.:)

"upgrade to a stainless steel model"
Just stainless steel or with some add-ons?

Stainless and like @ontarget said : from factory a better trigger, smooth action, comfortable fit... She should look like a classic ;)
Something that won't need to spend hundreds more in tuning or parts swap.

Then just for you to know, prices doesn't compare, firearms tends to be twice expensive here, so I may go up do 1500€ maybe 2000€ for a full set.

Yep. From your description look at the Kimbers. Mine is perfect out of the box. Smooth crisp trigger, eats any ammo, works well with third party mags.

I just picked up one of the 4" Rugers and it is great-

Flawless function and remarkably accurate for a compact .45.

I’d look for a DW first, then a Colt Competition if the DW is too pricy. After that Springfield or S&W, then Ruger. Kimber would be my last “main brand” option, though my Kimbers have worked fine.

"Great minds think alike"!

Sounds pretty much the same order I would go with if I were looking for a new 1911.

I have both the Taurus and Ruger in stainless. I haven't had a minute's trouble with either and really can't tell a bit of difference in their performance. Both do what they are supposed to and do it every time with out fail. There are two more Taurus owned by family members and they have given no problems either. All are many years old. That is all the information I can give on the subject.

I do not belong to the Kimber hate club. I quite like them and in their mid-range models they offer superior fit and finish and value. I also like RIA for value and function if not looks. My next 1911 will be a Colt or a WC or something like that so I can stop the gun know it alls at the range from pestering me about a real 1911. I also carry, concealed and occasionally open, the 1911 pistols. Two Kimbers and a Rock:

I think you should get a Kimber Stainless II, maybe the Target version with the adjustable rear sight.

I have a Remington R1S and it is nicely made and a very tight fit. Someday I will upgrade the sights but other than that its great, I only use it for range time and it never misses a beat. And truthfully I paid around $400 for it from Remington so a great price as well. I have a couple of Sigs in 9mm for carry.

I have a Kimber, Colt, and Dan Wesson 1911. I am not a fan of the Kimber. The quality and looks of the Dan Wesson is far better than the Colt and the Kimber. I like my Colt. It has 27K+ through it, runs well, and is very accurate.

I have a Colt Desert Eagle in 10mm, nicely made handgun.

I've not had as much experience with 1911's as some of my counterparts here, but I'm a big fan of the Sig 1911's. This is a Match Elite 9mm/38 Super. It was also made in 45ACP, which will be my next quest after I sort out the details on a couple of rifles I recently acquired. I currently own 4 SIG 1911 variants and have never had issues of any type (other than shooting 9mm in the 38 Super barrel. Once. Oops)
I've only owned 10 or 12 1911's total, and can only compare to Springfield, Colt, and Kimber.

Well, if isn't a Colt, it's kinda a Ford Corvette. ;)
But hey, OP, that Remington looks great; adjustable sights, nicely finished. How is the trigger?
If you really must have a new pistol, look for a Colt Competition. Really like mine; great trigger and sights. And it is a handsome pistol.

Notre ami français might be best served by a Kimber Stainless Target
ststarget_ls_catprofile.png
if one were available in le chre francais. Classic 1911 looks, target sights--just the thing for the range. The US MSRP of $1200 might be a stumbling point. Were it not for the legal complications, the target Kimbers are available in Bern at about 1 swiss franc = 1 USD prices. (My Swiss friend suggested that chf are not running equal to Euro in exchange rates right now.) Prices some higher in Prague, but that's due to demand, not exchange rate.
