I'm definitely not opposed to a new barrel, I've swapped barrels out with lower round count.
It just comes down to how far are you willing to go from what little I know about the 300 yard benchrest guys. They use slower twist and lighter typically flat base bullets than the long range shooters do, plus they're anal about reloading.

ETA my guns set up for long range do well enough at 100. Besides I have more fun with Rimfires at 100

Lapua cases, berger 53gr match bullets, weigh empty cases and measure case capacity with water, BR primers, weigh bullets, use match grade bullet seating die, divide brass into 5 round groups and keep them together, weigh each powder charge, trim brass to the .001 of each other. Then worry about the barrel. This is how I work on ammo for a ground hog gun that also has shot 1000 yd matches that is a wildcat with a tight neck chamber. 6-284 Waters with 26" lilja barrel. Happy shooting.
