A bit of Western nostalgia

Nice find!

Years ago there use to be a knife shop up at the nearby mall. Stopped in there one day and they had two baskets out on a floor stand that had Western knives in them; one had Boot knives (W77), while the other one contained the drop point Hunter (W83). They were clearance priced at $9.99! I couldn't pass up a deal like that but I didn't have all that much cash on me (pre-CC days), so I picked one of the Hunter knives (after looking all of them over very carefully).

I know, I know, I should have tried to make it back there to get one of the Boot knives but at the time I already had a pretty decent collection of boot knives to choose from. That and I also had a lot of other things I was interested in. Just not enough cash to go around!. Still have to say that both knives were a bargain at that price!

Those are very distinctive Western designs. Western made a good product. They were slow to board the stainless steel bandwagon, because stainless then was inferior in every way but appearance. I am sure it was a combination of things that did them in, but I preferred their hunting knives over Case and Buck.

I bought a Western bowie at a hardware store going out of business. Paid $17 if I recall correctly. Never did figure out what to do with it, so sold it to a buddy a couple years ago for $75 just to see his eyes light up. I guess maybe that's why it came home with me back in the 70s.

I’d love to find a Bowie at the $100 range. The nice ones I’ve watched went double that on eBay. A hard sell to my wife and to me too really.
