looking at a new shotgun remarms 870 or mossberg 590 , I have read the newer 870 's prior to rem arms were hit and miss
have not seen much on remarms 870
any opinions on these two as far as quality new off the shelf ?

Mossberg 590 is probably your best bet. The new RemArms 870s i've seen seem to be decent, however.

Twenty years ago, I would have called you crazy for even considering a Mossberg over an 870. Until I have a comfort level with the new Remingtons, I’m going 590 all day long. The 590s I’ve had have been incredibly solid. I have two today….a 590 and a 590A1.

thanks for all the opinions , I was also an 870 fan but am cautious of them now as prior to Remington's Bankruptcy the 870 quality suffered and during their Bankruptcy a lot of their support went away for example on the 870 you could buy the heavy springs that the 870 police came with and install then into the 870 express for a upgrade. All the parts dried up for Remington very fast and
now that they are rebranded as Remarms a lot of those parts are discounted. I like many of you guys would not of even considered going with a Mossberg 15 or 20 years ago but now I feel Mossberg may be the more solid company with better offerings to buy from

"RemArms LLC has elected not to provide any written-warranty, either "limited" or "full", rather than to attempt to comply with the provisions of the Magnuson-Moss Act and the regulations issued thereunder. There are certain implied warranties under state law with respect to sales of consumer goods. Firearms returned to RemArms for service will be evaluated to determine if services will be provided at a fee or free of charge."

The above is directly from RemArms website. The good thing is it doesn't say "NO" to repairing "pre-RemArms shotguns, yet I couldn't find any weblink for parts or service even for the presently made RemArms or pre-RemArms shotguns.

Here's Ruger's web-statement regarding pre-Ruger Marlin rifles:
"PRE-RUGER MANUFACTURED RIFLES
We do not have the parts, equipment, or expertise required to service existing, pre-Ruger, Marlin firearms and we cannot honor any warranty offered by the Remington Outdoor Company. We hope you understand the constraints that limit our ability to service firearms made prior to our acquisition.

If your Pre-Ruger-made Marlin firearm requires immediate repair or service, we recommend that you stop using it and contact a competent local gunsmith. You can also locate the independent service center closest to you listed below. These independent service centers can help you with your ongoing repair and service requirements. Please note that Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. is not affiliated with these service centers and we offer their contact information as a courtesy only. As such, you will need to work directly with the particular service center to arrange for payment of any charges associated with the service or repair. We recommend that you have a clear understanding of any charges before authorizing the work
."

Ruger is specifically saying "NO" to pre-Ruger Marlin support. Other than the one Ruger/Marlin brand lever action rifle, all pre-Ruger made Marlin's are essentially vintage firearms with only independent/small gunsmiths for any parts & service/repair, but I've gotten off-topic from the RemArms 870 shotgun.

I thought I'd previously looked up on RemArms' website regarding servicing the pre-RemArms 870 shotguns and thought there was something similar, but I didn't find it a moment ago. Hopefully, someday all parts will once again become available, if not service & repair, too; but that remains to be seen.

You are aware that Remarms has absolutely nothing to do with Ruger, right? Or have you missed the entire story....

And being a diehard 870 fan, I would buy a 590 primarily for issues of continuity of quality and better QC going forward.
Or buy an old 870...:)

I have had and have both. I prefer the steel receiver of the 870 and the better reliability of the 870 and much better safety. But Mossbergs are good if you watch out for things coming loose or binding.

Have read positive reviews on the new 870 Fieldmaster. Have not personally seen one, but then I`m not in the market. Supposedly a step up from the Express.

Remarms does not list a field master
On their website, I see them for sale online I wonder it they are just rebranded sportsman's models ,

Regarding Post 11,
I'm merely saying RemArms, at least, doesn't say they will not service the older 870s, but could. Therefore, right now, it seems they might do so.
My quoting of Ruger's website was only to further give an example the non-service of older Remington firearms could occur.
I am aware Ruger is a different company than RemArms.
That's all I was saying.

Remington had a limited lifetime warranty for the last decade, but now may not valid as there is no more Remington and remarms has clearly
Written RemArms offers NO warranty,
Mossberg offers a 10year warranty in their shotguns, really makes me feel the 870 may not be the best choice,
And I am an 870 fan of the police models but now 870p parts seem to be discontinued by remarms

Well it could hardly be a step down...

I can only speak from my own experience but I bought a second hand Express three years ago, a 2015 model. That would have been at the height of the " demise " of Remington quality due to the company being wrecked by the Cerberus crew, I believe. Anyway, I knew what I was getting, just wanted a backup and rainy day gun. The thing has been an absolute tank and I shoot it well, not a single problem. Must have lucked into the only good one (?). Have had and still have multiple Remington guns and they`ve all been without flaw. I hope RemArms can pull it off. Maybe the move to Georgia and a friendlier environment will help. America without Remington guns in the field is, well, unamerican IMHO.

i just bought my sister a new 590 persuader retrograde.
the wood is kinda dark, but not hideous. fit and finish were decent.
i am not a pump action shotgun guy, but it was a pretty nice gun.
i traded the new 590 to her, for my dads mid 70s rem 1100 12 ga.
we were both pretty happy!

I would trust Remarms before thinking I will ever grow to prefer aluminum to steel.

The US Military trusts the aluminum receivers on the Mossberg 590 and has done so for quite some time. The 590 holds up to the abuse given to them by GI's just fine.

I've used the 590 along with a short NFA version (for breaching operations) and never had a problem with them. I also have a Mossberg 500 that I have owned since 1985 that has been my goto hunting shotgun and skeet gun. The 500 has a very high round count and it hasn't failed.

@JO JO, I have owned both the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870. I can't say about the quality of the new Remarms 870. When the older 870's were good, then you wouldn't go wrong with either them or the 500. One thing I did not like about the 870 is I would always get a finger pinched when trying to load the magazine. Plus I prefer the ambidextrous tang mounted safety on the Mossberg.

I've got an 870 18" 12 Ga, but it's and older one from late 1980s. Always loved the 870s, but sad to say if the choice were between a new 870 or 590, I'd go with a 590 until REM gets its shirt together. However, I wouldn't limit myself to new when looking at any firearms. I'd find an older 870 in lightly used condition from back in the day.

Agree. I have an Wingmaster 20ga built in 1975. Not many, if any pump shotguns were built better than a 70's-80's 870 Wingmaster. Today?............
