I used to search shows and shops for boxes of old classic rounds like .32 (Colt, S&W Long and short). A few different .38 calibers as well for like $1 or $2. I sold them all off over the years to friends who knew where to come for an odd gun or revolver. Most of that stuff has dried up and they are now all gold nuggets.

I have been wanting a revolver in .32 Long or Magnum for a while. possibly a Break Open revolver. So long story short, at the range today and spotted two lonely boxes of Remington RNL .32 Long. Price was $24 a box per-pandemic price so I grabbed them. Always good to have factory ammo as well as the brass for loading. They had some Fiochi Wadcutter on the shelf but just took the RNL. I guess I just locked myself in.

Anyone else ever do this.

I was at an old family run fishing store that also sold ammo many years ago in Westchester Cty NY that was going out of business.

They had many old boxes left of odd ball calibers that were shopworn but still intact which I bought for a few bucks a box. I knew to find them new would be difficult and expensive.

I bought them all with the idea of selling them at the next gun show to ammo dealers. I was able to do so and turned a tidy profit.

Kind of the opposite. I had a .380 pistol and a whole bunch of ammo for it. I sold the pistol. A year later I decided to give the ammo away to a guy that was in need of it. I decided I wasn’t going to buy a .380 pistol in the future. Not 2 weeks after getting rid of that ammo a guy at work offered me a Walther PPK .380 at a very good price. I cursed Murphy and declined. This was just as the pandemic was kicking off.

20+ years ago Dan's Ammo had beaucoup cases of excellent Danish M2 ammo in both enblocs & strippers for a very good prices.

I bought multiple cases of each.

Afterwards I decided that I then had no choice but to acquire some rifles in which I could shoot this ammo. It was not that long before I had assortment of M1s, 03/03A3s & M1917s. :)

Also works (well, sometimes, maybe) with magazines. I still have the 2 G/K43 magazines that I bought years ago hoping to find a good rifle for a decent price.

Still hoping on that one ... ;)

it is an adventure, but since you're talking about top breaks, something I look for once in a while, but never took the leap - you're limiting what you can search for by deciding on the ammo in advance, no? Maybe you just really know what you want, and I have no idea ... lol

If they .32 S&W Short I would of bought that too! They had .38 S&W but that I still see around. I will buy whatever gives me the feeling when the time comes, when I see it. I was looking at a Police Positive in .32 Long a few weeks ago. Didn’t take it home, solid mechanically but cosmetically challenged. At the time I did enquire if they had any .32 Long for the gun they were selling. “Not in a while” was the response. It dawned on my that that might have been an opening into a successful negotiation. Who else other than me would buy a gun that the store doesn’t have ammo for on the shelf. So in this case a bird in the hand might just save on cost of the bush.

I got 2 boxes of 32 Long online, got 2 boxes while out of town and got some dies, bullets and brass from a local guy on MeWe. I thought I might trade my Dad out of his S&W 31-1 but he wouldn't trade. I offered him a very nice Blackhawk in 357 to go with his Security Six but he's hard to trade.

He-he.
Many years ago I had 3 boxes of 357 ammo follow me home.
Didn't have a 357 at that time.
Currently have a S&W 65-8, a Uberti SAA & an SP101 (all 3 are 357s).

I have 100 rounds of premium all copper hunting rounds in 25-06. I also have a set of competition reloading dies for 25-06. I love the idea of that cartridge, but do not and never have owned a firearm chambered in it, nor have I ever even held one, let alone fired one. someday.... priorities I suppose.

Not exactly ammo but I did buy a set of Hornady 45-70 dies used at an auction, they looked brand new. I did not have anything chambered for the 45-70 but knew eventually I would. I have also bought ammo I had no guns for when an external good deal came around for trading in the future. I'm sure there are more shooters who buy ammo like that than most would think.

Has anyone else ever made a similar mistake?? ...

Three or so years ago, I accidentally purchased a box of 100 357 Sig ammo thinking it was 357 mag... I wasn't paying attention. A few months back, I visited several LGS to see if they had any "357 defensive ammo." I was delighted when a hole in the wall shop owner said he had some in stock. He sat the box on the counter, told me the brand and price, I paid, picked up the box, got into my car, and then realized I did it again! I never specified 357 "magnum" and the shop owner assumed I meant 357 Sig... So I have a box of 100 FMJ range and a box of 20 JHP defense ammo in 357sig, but I don't have any guns chambered in that round. I think it's God is trying to tell me that I need to buy another handgun.... At least that's what Im going to tell my wife...

Othet than that, I brought 1000 rounds of Russian Tula 7.62x45 during the peak of the ammo shortage for 43 cpr. It popped up in stock after being OOS at that price for a while, so I figured I could sell it off later when the price doubles. Then ammo manufacturers and importers started to catch up, and the price dropped below what I paid. I was kind of disappointed until a couple of months later Biden banned all Russian manufactured ammo. I'll hold onto it until the price per round at least doubles.

I have a fair amount of 9mm but no pistol in that caliber. Springfield is making a Hi Power. Hmm .

Not ammo but lead bullets. I ordered a case (2000) 44 cal rnfp bullets for my 44 spl/magnum cowboy guns. Bullets were a little late and when I received them the inside boxes had torn with bullets everywhere and they were 45 cal bullets. I measured them in case they were mislabeled.

Contacted the manufacturer and let him know about the packaging and wrong caliber. He said he would ship the 44 cal bullets right away and to hold on to the 45s in the meantime. Later he contacted me and told me to just keep the 45s. I didn't have a 45 Colt revolver but had been considering buying a USFA Rodeo in 45 Colt. I ordered one figuring I essentially had a $150 discount with the free bullets. Still have it. This was just about 20 years ago.

Former coworker bought a deceased fellas entire reloading room. No guns but all of the ammo, tools, holsters, etc. the guns he bought most of separately and for a fair price after the grand slam he hit on the reloading gear made him feel bad. Anyways… he ended up with several hundred 32 long and 32 short and naturally started looking at revolvers. He bid up a k32 and got mad when he missed it. Got rid of all the ammo he had but didn’t have a gun for. I got a whole bunch of it, and when I ran across 6.5 prc brass I gave it all to him as a joke… a couple months later he had one.

I had a lot of 32 Rimfire before I had the guns to shoot it. The first gun was a S&W #2 Army and the only time I was cheated on a gun auction site. When I tried to get the seller to take it back he told me he was sick and needed the money worse than me!
