Winchester 94 30-30 or Rossi 92

I picked up a new 20" Rossi 92 in .357 several months ago. They are now made by CBC (think Sellier & Bellot, Magtech etc.) It seems to be very nicely made. I would also jump on a .44 at the right price as well as a 16" in either caliber. It's appreciably smaller than the 94 and holds a lot of rounds of much less expensive ammo. Nothing against the .30-30 or the 94 but if .357 is enough for deer in your area at the ranges you expect to shoot...

Comparing my buddies 92 to my 94, his isn’t any smaller or lighter. Mine holds 7+1 vs his 10+1. Both are 20” barreled guns.

The cost of ammo isn’t really a big factor when you reload. The main difference is the amount of powder. 28-30 grains of rifle powder is the big thing for 30-30. For 38 special, 3-5 grains of pistol powders or 13-18 in the case of 357 magnum. The 357 is more versatile though. But I spose I could make light loads for 30-30 just as easy using pistol powders. I do have some 4227 I was looking at doing just that with.

It's funny, you're contemplating dropping 30-30 for a 357 and I'm over here with my 357 looking out for a 30-30, haha.

I'd like to try 30-30 for my next cartridge, something between my 357 and 45-70. Aaaand I may be outing myself as a Henry fanboy here but as soon as I see a 30-30 steel side gate available somewhere I'm going to snag it up.

Winchesters and Rossi's look like they would be fun but I don't know how I'd like a top ejection port. I'd have to try someone elses first.

Ok back on topic, I also vote keep the 30-30 and save for a 357. Better to keep it around and only play with it sometimes than get rid of it and start missing it.

I love my Rossi ..357, feel safe and warm and fuzzy when walking the woods with it, and if I had to shoot a deer with it, it would work "okay". But, .357 is a step down from .30WCF. .44 mag in a rifle is pretty much equal to the .30WCF, with the .30 outranging the .44 a bit. So a .44 would make more sense.

The '92 is a joy to carry. But so is the '94. I have a '94 with a half magazine and 16.5" barrel, it's even lighter my my 20" '92. Anyhow, switching over from a .30WCF to a .44 mag or .45Colt would make more sense than going to a .357. And of course the most logical thing is to just save some bucks, keep the Winchester and get a Rossi.

Should I even entertain the idea? I got that old itch again, the itch to trade.

Are you kidding me? Even though I am definitely not in love with my '94, I would never consider trading it off for a Brazilian Rossi. My dad lived in Sao Paulo for 5 years and came home with one in .44. I considered it junk but he liked it because he thought it was cool.

If you want one, sell the '94 outright and offer about 70-80% of what they want for a Rossi.

While I can see why some like pistol caliber rifles, the only round that seems appropriate to me is a 30-30. I would certainly rather have a 30-30 Winchester 94 than any other caliber of brand.

I have, and have hunted with both. (.44 and .30wcf) Even though the .44 works great, I do think the .30-30 is superior, all things considered. Certainly outclasses the .357, which I also love.

You ain’t helping the itch to go away. I guess I better not price it or I’d sell, then I’d regret it I think.

My other buddy has a 94, pre64, in 32ws he’s wanting to sell though. Ironically, to get a Rossi like our other buddy. But he has an aversion to recoil and the 32 is just a bit much for him.

How much for that 32 special?
