Where/how do I go about reaming the chamber of a recent production Uberti model 1885 falling block rifle from 44 Special to 44 Mag? Thanks.

Do you intend to shoot black powder or smokeless? I would not shoot anything other black powder or a substitute in the .44 mag in a rifle that old. That being said a .44 mag finish chamber reamer and go, no go headspace gauge would do the job.

If it’s original, I agree. Older guns were made for the power of the cartridge they were made for. Same reason it’s not a bright idea to run modern 45-70 loads through an older rifle that used black powder 45-70’s.

If you’re itching for a 44mag rifle, I’d rec. grabbing a Henry or maybe a Marlin 1894.

NO! it’s a recent production Uberti falling block 44 Special I’d like to make to a 44 Magnum. It’s called a model 1885. And no I’m not going to use black powder.

You did not say whether your Uberti is the high or low-wall type. The high-wall is offered by the factory in .303 British, which is one of the calibers chambered in the original Winchester High-wall rifles. The High-wall should certainly be safe with the .44 Magnum, but the low-wall, while suitable for .44 Special pressures, would not be a good choice for the .44 Magnum, which operates at pressures of the same level as the .303 British. A good gunsmith can easily ream your chamber for the longer round, but should be aware of the limitations of the low-wall action, which does not provide as much support to the breechblock as the high-wall, and therefore is not suitable for the higher pressures.
