Any way to tell with certainty or does this just end up a really nice example of a Mod 66-1

Recently inherited by a friend upon his fathers passing. He remembers the day his dad brought it home in 1994 just as it is seen in these pics ($376.74 OTD). For certain never fired by his father.

I’ve serial number searched it to 1980 production. I’m assuming the zip tie was placed by the dealer his father bought it used from to either:
1. Prevent turn marks on a gun he knew to never have been fired or
2. Simply to prevent dry firing in the shop

I do see a very faint turn mark in a couple locations but to me this isn’t anything beyond factory function testing.

Either way, I’m encouraging him to remove the zip tie so we can at least give it a clean and wipe down. I don’t feel the zip tie is any form of evidence to never being fired. And if there isn’t a way to declare NIB without certainty then why not shoot the thing as well.

I’ll add that while hard to see in there I do not see any evidence of flame cutting either. I’ll try and get a pic of that also once we have some guidance on the zip tie.

Pics below. Appreciated anyone’s thoughts on this

That is a beautiful revolver, I have a 66 No Dash purchased by my Dad. Original box and papers as well. He bought it new and I have seen him only shoot a few hundred .38 Wadcutters and 1/2 box of .357 (I have the other half). I will add a pic so you can be the judge. It’s really faint and barely noticeable image.jpg image.jpg . If I were to polish the gun it would be gone. Hard for me to justify not shooting it. But it will not be shot by me, it’s been claimed by my son.

That wire tie is the work of the dealer, and proves less than nothing regarding having been fired or not.
It's a nice example, but it's not the Lincoln derringer. Your buddy should shoot it and enjoy it, and enjoy its family provenance too.

My thoughts as well.

Sorry for your friend's loss. I would love to have that fine looking piece. If your friend is a shooter he should get that handcuff off it and shoot it, after a proper check and cleaning. Don't know if it means anythingbut looks like a slightly distorted screwhead and faint scratch alongside the screw beneath the cylinder.

If your friend is concerned about shooting it, perhaps he should sell it and take the funds and buy something he intends to shoot.

If he's a shooter, that is. You didn't mention that.

Sorry to hear about your friend's father passing. The gun itself looks pristine, as though it had just left the factory. It certainly has collector's value, more so if the father kept the original box and paperwork that came with the gun.

That being said the plastic zip tie means nothing in the overall scheme of things as it could have been put on the gun at any time. If the dealer use to attend gun shows, typically you would be required to put a zip tie on each of your guns to show that they're unloaded and safe to handle. Or else he considered it that nice of a gun and wanted to keep it from being handled too much when it was on display.

At any rate if it were my gun I would use it in memory of my father and enjoy such a great family heirloom.

Thanks to everyone for all the insight and feedback.

We’ll get the strap off it and give it a good wet patch/dry patch and inspection. I’m pretty sure he will shoot it as it will never get sold so any loss of value would not be in consideration. His overall plan is to build the handgun collection that his dad wanted and this can obviously serve as the cornerstone.

Zip tie means nothing the gun is stainless so turn lines can be easily removed.

It a nice 66 worth $950 to $1200. Depending on where you are. Shooting it isn't going to destroy the value.

The unturned thing really applies to blued guns, and blued Colts in particular.
