What’s your core working guns?

True "working" gun - my off duty carry CZ P-10C FDE. Rides with me always.
I have a mixmaster Frankengun of an AR-15 that gets some range time. I don't hunt or shoot competition, so that's really the only ones that "work" for me. Maybe when a buddy takes me out for some muzzle loading hunting the new T/C Renegade 54 cal will get some work done.

Primary carry guns (pick one): Glock 17, 22, 20SF, 35 (In the FL heat and despite living in a "good area" - untuck shirt, wear belt, and conceal a decent gun)
"Back-up" to a primary (99% of the time) or solo when mowing the yard, jogging (1% of the time) Sig 365 / PM9.
("Back-up" is not because I'm in a "bad area" - it offers option to put my hand on it without revealing I'm carrying, or quick access with weak hand, carried in weak hand front pocket)

I have a AR15 and a Mossberg 500/Shockwave (they are rarely shot) - the Glock on my belt is what would be used 1st for HD.
I have revolvers (antiques ;)) and 22 lr pistols none of which have been shot in years.
I don't hunt anymore, nor do I have a need to dispatch varmints.

1) Shield PC 9mm for solo EDC, 2) Springfield Range Officer Target 9mm, 3) Winchester 12 ga. SXP, 4)Taurus Tracker 4" .22, 5) S&W 15-22, 6)Ar15 5.56,
Beretta APX Centurion 9mm second choice CCW or as primary with S&W back-up
Bersa Thunder .380 and Ruger LCPII third choice CCW/back-up

I don't own any of these but this would be my list of must haves.

Carry-Shield, G19, J frame.
22LR with scope.
12ga semi auto
Bolt action rifle in appropriate caliber for whitetail deer.

This covers everything from fun to SD/HD.

I rarely have had over 8 guns at a time so let’s use that for a good number. The rules are loose so if you can’t live without a bakers dozen that’s fine. But what is your must have working guns. Currently I only have 5 guns, so there is a few spots I’m looking to fill. But mostly I always get working guns that fit my needs with little overlap. That’s what I’m interested in here.

I don’t mean saying a 22, a 12 gauge, and a cc piece. I mean what are the actual guns you have or want to fits your needs.

I have more than I need, but if I had to pare down to a "core" of 8 guns from what I already own, I guess the following would work for now. Ignoring future wants and needs, of course. ;)

Centerfire Handguns: CZ75D PCR, Remington RM380, S&W 66-2

Centerfire Long Guns: Beretta CX4, Marlin 1894 CSBL

Rimfire Handguns: Ruger Single Six 9.5"

Rimfire Long Guns: Marlin 39AS, Zastava MP22 Mini-Magnum

Take into consideration that I've never been an LEO and I've been an "urbanite" (thanks to urban sprawl) for the last 20 years.

Plinking- mk3- 22lr
Burglar - Mossberg 500- 12 ga

I would like to add an ar to the list but since it's limited I guess it doesn't make the cut.

I own a bunch of guns but my core ones I use most of the time are:

1. CCW - Ruger LC9s Pro, Glock 43x, & Glock 19.
2. HD and travel - Windham AR15
3. Deer Hunting - Savage Axis 270
4. Killing varmints around the house - NEF .410 single shot
5. Plinking w/ a 22LR - S&W Model 17

My "Must Have" list of working guns:

10) Colt AR15 .223
11) Ruger 10/22 .22

Well the OP did say we could list a Baker's Dozen, if we wanted to!

So I decided to take advantage of this most generous offer and go with an even Dozen instead!

What I have noticed that I keep around and handy:

1) EDC - small .38 Spl
2) .22 plinker (rifle) - levergun
3) .22 plinker (handgun) - revolver
4) "House" gun - full sized .357 revolver
5) Shotgun - short barrel 12 ga. pump
6) Mousegun - micro .380
7) Intermediate cartridge rifle (.30-30/7.62x39)
8) Long range rifle (.30-06)

I don't hunt and don't have anywhere to shoot long range, so #7 and #8 are mostly theoretical anyway. But they're around.

These are the guns that usually get picked up when the situation calls for a special purpose.

22 pistol Ruger 22/45
22 rifle CZ455
6.5 Creedmoor M18 Mauser
357 GP100 Ruger
9mm Sig P36
40 cal Browning Hi-Power Practical
20ga Beretta BL-3
12ga Winchester 1300

I just retired my Glock 42 that I have carried for 4 or 5 years in favor of the Sig.

Interesting replies. I’ve always been of the mindset that I’d rather have a small number of guns I’m extremely intimate with than a large amount that is just an accumulation.

I do have a thing for single shot 22s, so I’m on the hunt for another after having a bit of a dry spell.

And I might be inclined to get another bolt gun since selling the 30-06 I previously had. I just ain’t sure though. Maybe a small caliber like 222 or 223 that I can make my own jacketed bullets for would be fun. But I’m also considering a mini14...

I guess half the fun for me is the reloading and casting adventure. I don’t have any interest in making cast work on something like 6.5/270/7mm. I didn’t really get the 30-06 bug when I’ve had several. But... maybe I should have explored it more?

Core only

G26 EDC
G17 bedside
G20
Ruger MK3 Hunter
Arsenal Sam 7
Browning 300 Win Mag w/BOSS and Zeiss Diavari
Beretta 12 gauge

My minimum battery of "must have" working guns:
  • Mossberg 500 12 gauge with a 28-inch vent rib barrel with removable chokes, 24-inch rifled slug barrel with cantilever scope mount and a Leupold M8 4X, and an 18-inch smooth bore slug barrel with rifle sights.
  • 4-inch Ruger GP100 in .357 Magnum. If I could only own one handgun, this would be it. Load it from mild to wild.
  • Glock 23 with a 9mm conversion barrel. I've put a lot of rounds through my G23, both .40S&W and 9mm. I could probably be happy with the G48 with a couple of Shield Arms S15 magazines, though I'd miss the option of shooting .40S&W.
  • Stainless Ruger Single Six convertible. I like having the option of .22LR or .22WMR.
  • Remington 700 XCR Compact Tactical in .223 Winchester. It outshoots my AR.
  • Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08. Great GP hunting rifle.
  • Ruger 10/22, preferably with a can.
I could make do with the above. But since I still have room to make eight, I'll add,
  • Ruger Hawkeye African in .375 Ruger ... for anything needing more than the 7mm-08 at ranges further than a 12-gauge slug.

I don’t hunt nearly as much as I used to but if I had to break it down to just core working guns I really only need 3, possibly 4.

EDC, nightstand gun (that could serve as a EDC in a pinch), AR rifle (5.56/.300 BLK for HD upper, 6.5 Grendel upper for hunting). Possibly a shotgun if I get back into bird hunting.
