Ammo Shelves at Academy Overflowing

The local BPS has ammo on the shelf regularly, never has the same brand or load available on two consecutive trips, but generally they have most cartridges covered. Sure seems like folks are pretty well stocked up though. I went to the local gun show with a 200rd box of federal FMJ 45acp, offered at $100...$0.50/rd, no takers. Granted, that's $0.15 higher than it once was, but $0.25 less than it is now. The answer i most frequently got was..."if I didn't already have ' x,xxx rounds of 45 already, that would be a good deal"

Central Texas Bass Pro is packed full of high priced ammo with lots of people in the isle. Some guys were jumping all over 38 Special and grabbing several boxes.

I was there for reloading components and there was no powder or primers on the shelf, so I walked out with nothing.

My local Academy Sports must be last on the ammo delivery run.
Worst yet, they post their weekly ad showing all kinds of shotgun ammo but when you check its availability its..... OUT OF STOCK.

I used to have a semi truck that I leased to FedEx. It had two 85 gallon fuel tanks. Today it would cost about $1,000 to fill up. Once.

Think about the cost to ship a truckload of lead ammo across country at 4 1/2 mpg. $1.50 per mile just for fuel

Agree! Until fuel prices are under control, nothing will get back to normal prices, including guns, ammo, food, etc.

Ammo prices were sky high during normal fuel times. I can see that these store will take fewer small shipments and more bulk shipments. Also, I think people have ran out of gun and ammo money. Gas at $5, Steak at $15#, lumber at 2x…. hard to justify a box of .223 for $13

The BPS in San Antonio keeps primers out of sight in the wood drawers behind the knife counter. Yeah, pretty sneaky.

Only way I knew that was to ask someone. I’ve since gone back three times and bought twice. Last time I was told they were out. I wasn’t sure if I believed the guy or not.

One time, I asked a gun counter guy who told me they hadn’t had primers for a long time, but told him which drawer to open, and he found several bricks of SPP. He genuinely looked puzzled and had to ask another guy who told him limit was one brick
per person.

I don’t know about powders at BPS, but if you are looking for powder and you are near San Antonio, check out the Bexar Community Range a mile off I-10 east of the city. They always have a decent selection.

that’s wrong! I don’t like to bother clerks but i’ll ask every time now! what did you pay for a brick?

I’ve heard about this tactic and I would have asked an employee to check if I had 30 min to wait in line. They are slow as dirt and I happened to be there at a busy time. I’ve found late in the day on Friday is a good time to check BPS.

Before the pandemic, I was only concerned with handloading what was costing me 2/3/sometimes 4 dollars a round to buy off the shelf in factory ammo. Today, that round doesn't even show up on ammoseek. In the coming years I will expand my handloading more than a factory ammo stock.

Made a run to Lawton Atwoods for some bolts and went by the gun counter. There is a plentiful supply of 9mm, 10mm (yep 10mm), 40 caliber and .45 auto. There were 20 rounds of .38 Special +P for $28.95: Need a few rounds for a sometimes carry gun but i won't pay that price. A brick of 500 rounds of Aquila .22 LR is $37.99. Lots of .308 Federal Match for well over $40 per box of 20. Some .223/5.56mm called TUI (tumble on impact); $20.99 for 20 rounds.

I found the 150 grain 308 Norma at academy a good price at 25 dollars. I bought 6 boxes to have the Norma brass. Done with buying factory again....
