How good are Taurus Trackers

I'm looking for a fun range .22 D/A revolver. Worth saving some money by going with Taurus instead of Ruger or S&W?

My only Taurus is a model 970 Tracker in 22 LR. I bought it new in 1999. It's an accurate and reliable shooter. My mods have been to change the hammer and trigger springs to reduce the hammer pull and trigger break (now 2 3/4 pounds SA) as well as to ditch the rubberized factory grips in favor of larger, wooden target grips. I've had no complaints with this piece, and it is a good, solid performer.

Mine 22 Tracker was accurate and reliable. The trigger was way too stiff, so I traded it away.

If I had it to do over, I could probably change some springs and polish a surface or two and make the trigger decent.

On the other hand, my S&W K22 is so much a better revolver that they're not really comparable. The K-frame S&W 22's are probably expensive these days, though.

S&W about $300+ higher in my area if you can find one.

I have been using a Taurus M94 .22 in my pistol classes for years. Hard to tell how many rounds through it. Very reliable. The DA trigger pull is somewhat high, but I like that as it teaches good trigger control to the students. I also have the Trackers in .357 mag, .44 mag, and a M905 in 9mm and haven't had any problems with them. Taurus makes good revolvers despite the bad press that they sometimes get. Most of my gun buddies also have Taurus revolvers, mostly in .357 mag, and haven't had any problems with them. Good value revolvers.

The Tracker series equivalent is the 992. I do not have any experience with it, but my Tracker in 990s and 991 (in .22wrm) are accurate.Actually I own two 990s. One in 6.5in barrel size and one with a 4 incher.
The 992 comes with two cylinders. One in .22lrf and the other is the .22 magnum. Those are interchangeable.

I'm mostly a single action guy but like the Taurus revolvers. I have several and the Tracker in 22lr with 6.5 inch barrel is my second favorite DA 22: well built, accurate, comfortable in my hand, and a good value. (I was lucky to find a K-22 in great shape at a great price but that was years ago. That's why the Tracker 970 is in second place.)

If you don't mind the heft of them or the annoying combo cylinders (I really would prefer a .22 LR only option to reduce the cost and also have a frame sized for the shorter LR instead of WMR) they are a fantastic value. I've been on a Taurus bender for a few years now, recently got the PT92 and it is excellent, but their revolvers are very hard to come by since the pandemic started.

With the 70s style inflation we're being whacked with I would buy whatever new Taurus revolver you can find that's at a reasonable price and just sit on it a few years, I swear they'll all be worth $100 more than what you paid. Ruger revolvers are selling at a ridiculously high price and the value isn't there with them anymore. Great for those who already own them and are selling, but it is not a buyer's market for Ruger these days.

Where did you get your grip? I have 9 shot 22 Tracker that I made a grip for, that rubber thing is gross, my grip still ain't quite right.

Hi, Jackrabbit1957 -

Those grips were purchased a few years ago off of eBay and from a seller by the name of jarowan, as I recall. Not sure if he's still advertising on eBay or not. The wooden target grips are light years of improvement over the factory goodyears!

I have a 992 Tracker, and I really can't think of anything to say against it. Which is probably about all I can say for it. If you want a boring gun that just plain works, then a Tracker will do you well. I replaced the grips on mine, too, with some I made. And I de-blued and polished it. That made it somewhat more eye-appealing, IMO.
