My edc is a S&W 642 in a triple K IWB holster. This set up has worked well for me in the past but lately I have been thinking about putting my CZ PCR in the rotation. The rise in crime(especially car jacking) in my town has me a bit concerned and I'm thinking about using a cross draw holster while driving. The Andrews leather "car jacker" has my attention but it's pretty steep at $135. Any of you folks use one?

What town are you from?

I was a uber driver for 3 full times years in Seattle. 8,000 rides and estimated 13,000 people in my car. I seen it all and 99.99% people are good. But I had some very scary moments were I knew something was up. I has my CZ-P07 on my left hip IWB and I’m right handed so I could cross draw. Got good at it too. Why Cross draw? well in a car a passenger would see you reaching in your right hip but you could fake a left hip draw easy.

Car jackings on the rise

Carjackings have been on the rise across the country for the last 7 years. Take Philly, they have over 562,000 cars in the city they drive over 14 million miles a day, but had 840 carjackings in 2021, which is up from the previous year. So they are averaging less than 3 per day for 562K cars.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being prepared for eventualities, but at the same time "on the rise" even if the number had doubled, is still an extremely small %.

With that said, remember that a goodly number of carjackings happen while you are out of the car, often when you are about to get in or have just gotten out. People at gas pumps, loading or unloading items or people in their vehicles, delivery drivers, and people who have just gotten home are often easy targets. You may be bumped (faux accident) to get you to stop and be out of your car so that your car can be jacked. So if you are going to start carrying crossdraw, then be proficient with the new arrangement both inside of your vehicle and when you are out of your vehicle.

Why not carry a handgun on your body and a second one (like the snub wheelgun) off your body inside of your vehicle if you are that concerned? A holster could be modified in a way that is can be attached somewhere in the interior of your vehicle close to your firing hand. I'm a righty, so I would place it near the shifter or between the driver/passenger seat somewhere. I would have a primary on me holstered at all times, and a secondary more accessible when seated in the car. The only drawback would be securing it after you park.

Or forgetting about it where it can be seen, tempting a break in.

I agree with having two guns, in his instance but have no suggestion on a cross draw holster personally. Maybe tuck one somewhere accessible while driving and toss it in your pocket before you get out of the car. Crossdraw plus pocket/stowed in vehicle while driving. If you are using a 642 it'd be good to New York reload if needed. I love my 36, so I appreciate your love for a wheel gun.

I use appendix a lot, not relevant to the holster suggestion but like the cross draw grants me quick access versus pocket or a 3 through 5 o'clock carry IWB. Particularly while in a vehicle..I am interested in how you make out sir. Godspeed in your search.

In regard to the rise of carjackings, have a dashcam..and one that records audio and both front/rear recording. So it will record you in the car and them in front/if they approach that way. Dashcam is paramount regardless just because of road rage. Not going to stop anything, but its cheap insurance.

Sam Andrews is a superb craftsman. Save your lunch money a few extra weeks and you will be thrilled.

For rideshare drivers carrying any kind of defensive device is prohibited so they cannot be kept where there is *any* possibility of them being seen. One complaint from a customer will get the driver deactivated with no recourse.

Sounds to me like another situation in life where factors need to be considered and navigated accordingly.

Do it.

Organized gang jackings are getting really bad. Time to up your game. And we need to address training on multiple targets, and speed.
Glock switches are very abundant, as well, right now. The days of the inept criminal with a Lorcin, are over.

I almost mentioned the proliferation of "switches" and how common they are used by street gangs. These guysrunning around with machine pistols with 30 round"sticks" as they call them..hence why I carryan automatic mostly. Usually a hicap .32or 9mm.

I've went back to a shoulder holster when I have to be on the road.Sometimes I make trips to unfamiliar territory to pick up a piece of equipment and may have a lot of cash in the truck.A simple old Uncle Mike's rig holds my SA-35 on the left side and two mags and a folding knife on the right. As an added bonus,it straps to my belt and holds me britches up.The pistol's on my left side,so it's hard to see but easy to reach.I hate the thought of having a second pistol in the vehicle to have to keep up with.

There's little wisdom in keeping a firearm unattended inside a vehicle for theft, and a break-in. That possibility is the main motive for many vehicle break-ins, not cash or a radio!

We have few if any car jackings here in NH, as it can be assumed that most any citizen could be packing. That plus folks are just better behaved up here. Same goes for home invasions...big mistake!

Not really Glock switches but the perps who manufacture it print the switch with a Glock logo, so I have heard. Anyway, I am not sure how one can defend against a a jacker who has the switch. Give up the car and they may just spray you anyway.

A buddy of mine has a plastic covered magnet on his polaris that allows him impressive start to first shot times. It looks a lot like this.

Never seen him cross himself or passengers when “drawn”.

My younger brother had a friend who stole hub caps and whatever he could take from people's cars. Then, one night, an owner and his buddies caught him and beat him up. The friend never stole again. End of story.
