I am looking for some assistance in understanding the various types of MP5 lowers, trigger packs, and trigger pack components. I see terms such as “SEF, semi, foul auto, Navy, FBI, ambi, etc” when lowers and trigger packs are discussed. To add to the complexity, I was looking at possibly assembling a trigger pack from individual components, but there appears to be “series 90” parts as well as “full auto” springs or “semi-auto” springs, etc. I am trying to determine what combination of lower, trigger box, and parts is compatible.

I would likely be using a Magpul lower and an AP5 upper so if you can tell me what combo of parts works for that setup, I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Download the ATF NFA handbook and towards the beginning they talk about the trigger packs and denial shelfs, etc. They don't really get into the SEF/semi/Navy variants but they talk about the full auto vs semi auto differences. hkparts.net has trigger packs for sale last I knew and you should be able to tell by the description the difference between Navy, semi, etc.

There's a lot of youtube videos out there too with some good info.

A "Navy" lower ought to be labeled "0/1/F" on the side. Receiver would be rollmarked MP-5N.
SEF lower has the German Initials for Safe, Single, Full (S, E, and F).
The Feeb version uses the pictographs on the side (IIRC, so only a "maybe")
There are a number of arguments on sears and burst packs--which may be better haggled over in the various HK fora out there.

I had an HK94/MP5 conversion that was converted by Fleming back in the 80's. It was a registered receiver gun. They did not modify the reciever itself, other than to shorten the barrel, so it still had the semi only "shelf" in the front of the receiver and used a one pin semi lower, not a two pin lower. They simply modified the trigger pack so that it would fit into the shelf. A standard MP5 trigger pack would not.

I could drop that trigger pack and modified bolt carrier into any HK 94 and it would work.

Ive always been amazed that the ATF allowed the HK's into the country as easy as they are to convert, especially with the availability of parts back in the 80's and 90's.

I am guessing this is going on a Registered Receiver or?

It will remain a semi auto SBR built from a Century AP5. As I look at swapping parts for 922R compliance, I am trying to determine the feasibility of replacing the entire lower half (the housing, the trigger box, sear, trigger, all the springs, etc). I am confused as some parts say full auto, which suggests that they will only work with guns set up as full auto, but that is not necessarily the case as a full auto M16 BCG can work in a semi auto AR15.

I want to ensure that 1) I don’t inadvertently possess or construct a lower half that is capable of shooting full auto and 2) that the combination of parts (certain type of lower housing, certain type of trigger box, certain springs, etc) are compatible, thereby preventing me from having to purchase additional different parts.

It looks like the MP5 trigger is exceptionally horrible, I heard they were bad but I didn't know they were so bad to where "a cheap ($40) AR15 trigger is a vast improvement over an authentic MP5 trigger".
An HK authorized clone vs a melted spork with an AR15 trigger group.

I don't know that the MP5 triggers are bad per say. I got to shoot a few MP5 variants while in the Army. They all had decent triggers and were very controllable on full auto. Controlled short bursts were easy to do.

When fullauto becomes more obtainable to the average surf I'll probably stick with pistol calibers like 9mm SMGs such as MP5 clones.
MP5 triggers can be improved greatly with a trigger job.
