Likewise, thanks for the great story behind those magnificent Remingtons and U.S. Grant.

A great story and an amazing pair of revolvers. Now if I can only figure out where that extra 3 mil I had laying around somewhere is.....

I was going to get those, but I left my spare change in my other pants.

Thanks for posting. I've been a Civil War buff (and relic hunter) all my life, and learned a lot from the article.

There’s no paperwork to prove the story. Signature mark of engraver missing. Placed away in obscurity for 150 years. Pristine blueing and the current owner passed away. Lots of red flags for me. I’ll pass

Masterful writeup of the man and the provenance of the guns. I hope whomsoever buys them takes good care of them. It would be niced if they were loaned to a decent AMA membership museum for the public to enjoy.

Best guess is that Grant carried two revolvers during the war.
His go-to was a S&W .22 Short Number one Tip Up he carried in his coat pocket. This was a favorite carry gun of many Union Civil War senior officers.

His big gun was one or possibly two Colt Dragoon .44's. It's not certain but it's thought these were 3rd Model Dragoons bought early in the war.
These were carried in saddle holsters on his horse.

Hopefully somebody with $3 million burning a hole in their pocket will realize there's no provenance. It makes a nice story, but at best these are some presentation guns that may have been presented to Grant.

They are pretty and unusual but Grant did not carry them in battle or apparently put them to any use. So, somebody presented him some pretty pistols in a box and he accepted them. And set them on a shelf. Not sure they are all that historical as a relic.

Presentation revolvers with the image of the presentee carved in the grips seems strange to me. I doubt if Grant was that vain. I doubt if even General Patton was that vain. Also, the carved images look more like Tomas (Stonewall) Jackson or John Bell Hood.
