Nipples

Being the cheap, er frugal individual I am I fit the nipples to the caps I use, haven't seen anything but CCI in a long time and I have several thousand stashed. Have seen slixshots in several pistols I tuned but have no real experience with them.

I have used both. I prefer Treso/Ampco over Slix Shot because the spent cap is less likely to fragment and cause cap jams. Those tiny side vents on the Slix Shot nipples can really blow a cap to pieces. It doesn’t bother me at all to have to pick a used cap off a nipple after shooting a competition round, but fighting a cap jam while the timer is running is maddening!

Because they look like the old Hot Shot nipples. I used one in a rifle way back when and it didn't last 10 years.
I've had hot shots on my CVA Walker for over 20 years, they look pretty good for being old and decrepit. I used to shoot it lot, haven't seen any problems with them.

It's been rare that I felt the need to replace a set of nipples.
Why is the OP considering such?

During the C&B era, folks didn't all go out and grab up aftermarket cones/nipples so why now?
I've even been able to restore mushroomed (due to previous owners dry firing) to their former glory

Apart from the bigger flash holes compared to "Treso", which is not always a bad thing, factory nipples on Pietta and Uberti tend to vary in size slightly. If they are undersized for a particular cap brand, one can cut them (grind them, actually) thus effectively enlarging the cone, but only to about 0.008" shorter (depending on the particular gun) and sometimes this is not enough for a good, tight cap fit. Not to mention, that for some people this operation is beyond their abilities. Again - depends on the nipple, depends on the caps (RWS 1075 & S&B in my case), depends on the revolver. But what one gains here is loosing contact with the hammer - the way they should be set up in the first place.
So most people prefer to simply switch to more uniform made after market nipples - it's easier.

Either way you cant go wrong. I prefer slix but use treso as well. I mainly prefer slix as I have alot of rws 1075+ caps, remington 10's and cci 11's and they were made specifically for those caps.

Either ones will beat factory nipples by leaps and bounds.
Yes I know factory nipples will work just fine and if thats how you like your pistols set up no harm no foul!
If you havent tried out aftermarket nipples maybe give em a shot. You'll soon see why everyone has jumped aboard the aftermarket nipple train.

I chose slix shot because of the little vents. I put a colt saa mainspring in my NMA to lighten the hammer pull for shooting a cartridge cylinder. The slix doesn't cause my hammer to rebound as much when using the c&b cylinder. So then I put slix shots in my 1851 to help stop cap sucking, and it really helped.

OP: It really does depend on what you are expecting to accomplish by changing nipples. Appearance; function; factory nipples rust because you don't tend to clean them properly (I do); etc... I haven't had a problem that Treso nipples would fix (yet).

The Slix-Shots turned out working best on my 1862, (actually Mr. Jack Rabbit turned out working best for my 1862) but the Treso's on my 1860 are just right for it. My Remington don't care, but the best cap fit (CCI#11) for the Remington (Uberti) was with some stainless cones of which I don't remember what brand they were/are. The #11's were loose on the Remington's factory cones, and CCI#11's is all I got. But I got plenty. So a lot can depend on the individual revolver, might be hard to say what will work best for you.

Probably was not much of an aftermarket for cones. If any. I imagine you got them from Colt or Remington, or whoever, and waited two months for the Pony Express to bring them to you. !!!! Maybe a good gunsmith had them. ?? I think you just got by with what you had, not much fine-tuning going on. !!

Just a mention, the CCI#11 Magnum caps are smaller than the standard #11's. The magnums are absolutely too tight for any of my revolvers (all three! a massive collection)(but three different types of cones) but fit my Plains Pistol just fine.
