I just won a S&W 617 10-shot 6” .22 LR on GB, it got to my FFL this weekend. Gun seller wrote it was “Factory New” on the details page.

My FFL’s are good guys who will check out guns I buy and give them a quick glance to check for issues before I make the drive over to fill out the 4473 and start the 10-day waiting period. (They started this for me after we all missed a slight bulge in a Model 14-3 barrel :(.)

I get a call today that the “Factory New” 617 cylinder wont open, the sideplate screws looked buggered and it just looks “fingered over” compared to the new guns they sell. The cylinder ultimately opened when the ejector rod was held and the cylinder spun enough to allow it to open, when opened the rod was loose enough to turn by hand.

I left a phone message for the seller, I haven’t had a call back. (I will say the seller listed another 6” 617 with the same pics used for this one. That’s not too comforting. :()

Do these side plate screws look “Factory New” to you?

Stay safe.

No way it hasn't been messed with.
IMHO there is nothing about that pic that looks "factory new".
Not just the screws and finish, but it looks like someone tried to polish off a turn line using a Scotch Brite pad.
I would not be happy about all that since the seller seems to have misrepresented the gun.

The wear on the trigger would tell me it's not a factory new gun. It had a lot of handling even if it hasn't been fired.

had an issue like that once, not gunbroker, but I just rejected the inspection outright at my FFL and said send it back where it came from, cut my losses..

I've seen other guns on Gunbroker like this advertised as LNIB that were far from new condition. Worse yet, this one was advertised "factory new". Sorry you've got to deal with it.

That side plate looks like it has been off a few times and they sure did not use hollow ground screw drivers.

Just one of several reasons I will not ever purchase a used firearm. Donate it to me, OK. But no money exchanged, ever.
Don't get me started about buying online. If they are not crooks, they are at least incompetent.

I haven't seen a new Smith revolver in quite sometime but that looks pretty scruffy to be new even with today's workforce. I would say someone is lying through their teeth about the "Factory New".
