Anyone loading for a Ruger M 44?

I load for the M77/44 bolt action. Are you talking about it, the 96/44 lever guns, the original Deerstalker semi-auto rifle, 1961-85, or the Deerfield carbine, 2000-06?

I worked with my .44 carbine using my go to .44 revolver powder - 4227
getting me 3" plus 50 yd. groups.

Loading 23.5 grs. H110 under the 240 jacketed soft points made all the difference.
Loads are taper crimped (for smooth feeding in Desert Eagles) and after plenty of testing by
leaving the magazine loaded while shooting satisfies me the bullets stay in place.
Groups at 50 were just over an inch for 5 shots using a vintage 4x Leupold pioneer scope.

Not all of the carbines shoot the same in my experience though.
My first carbine was a very early mint gun that just didn't take to any load I tried,
so down the road it went (to a collector).

The H110 produces some bark, but it flat out delivers for me.

I may have ended up with that turkey. For sure I had one like it, briefly. I did some programming work for a gun store in the late ‘90’s and bought a later ‘80’s 44 Carbine. Cause it was cool. It was also a jamamatic. Sold it back a month later. It turned out to be something minor that Ruger fixed for free but by then I’d moved on. I never tried it with handloads since it was jamming on factory so I can’t help there. H110 and a Sierra 240gr JHC sounds like a good plan to start, though. I do remember those guns came with a warning not to use lead. It clogs the gas port for some reason.

My dad just gave me one. I cleaned it pretty good from all the years of accumulated crud. Haven't shot it yet or even worked a load for it. I loaded up some 44 mag using a load my dad had in his log. But those were for pistol. I have H110 and IMR4227. My dad has a good supply of bullets. Thanks for the info. I too will start with some H110 and some 240 grain bullets.

I've tried 180,200 and 240gr Hornady XTPs with H-110 and WLP they functioned well but the POIs were quite different mostly in elevation. The 240gr XTP with 24.0gr of gave a average of 1,795 fps, the 200gr XTPs averaged 2,082 fps with 28.2gr of H-110 I didn't get numbers on 180s
I did try some 240gr Xtreme plated rnfp and WLP with 18 and 18.5gr of VV N110 but they would not feed from the tube, so I had to breech load them. The 18gr load shot accurately and ejected well and locked the bolt back five out five times. I need to try shortening the COL and get a taper crimp die. The 18.0gr load averaged 1,576 fps and 18.5gr averaged 1,612 fps, the plating held up fine, I hope I can get these to run.

Well the Lee taper crimp came today and it did a good job. I shortened up the COL from 1.595" to 1.576", I think this will work well for this Xtreme 240gr 429' plated RNFP with a taper crimp in the Ruger M 44 carbine.
I put together a few dummy rounds and they seem good to go.

I have the newer version and don’t know if this applies to yours. I’m of the impression you’re NOT supposed to run lead ammo through them as it fouls the gas ports/system. Again. Don’t know about the early models.

You have the solid top action whereas mine looks like the Mini 14s.

I worked up a load that reliably cycles my gun.

Win 296…24.9 grains….WLP….Starline….XTP 240 grain.

these produced 1814-1843 FPS through the chrono

Caution: 25 grains is max

Grizzly Cart. Company cycled reliably….240 gr. JHP…1400 FPS is on the box per manufacturer. In my gun they produced 1729-1750. Very consistent .

10 round mags are available for them
