Do you carry at church? Are you part of a ministry that is serious about protecting the flock?

I spoke to my minister today about the Taiwanese church shooting and we’re having continual discussions about this topic.

I would call ours a crowdsourced approach. . . when you come to worship on a Sunday morning or evening, there isn't really anywhere to be that's out of sight or a few strides from at least a couple men who are attentive to visitors. Among the 350+ adults, there's at least 20 (that I know of) who are always armed, and I learn of a few more who always have been every year.

We are welcoming, but always watching.

And door management, cameras, walkthroughs, etc, of course.

Carry at our church will be banned by non-criminal city ordnance on July 1 unless specifically authorized by leadership. I am not sure it's worth it to open that can of worms with the deacons for the times that we attend services.

There are about 15 of us, including me, who volunteer as armed security for our church. It's well organized with us meeting twice a month for firearms training where we run through different drills. It's mandatory that we attend at least once per month. We've met with the local county sheriff to inform them of what we're doing and have them give us suggestions. We have different people come in for additional training, such as the USCCA. We have radios with ear pieces so we can communicate and are stationed around the building. We have kits to address different medical emergencies. The people running it have done a good job of doing so. We fortunately have not had serious situations to address, but from time to time have had people who had mental health issues attend our services who were ultimately harmless, but needed to be watched and the occasional irate person, such as a husband who came in yelling at our pastor as his wife became a Christian against his wishes, and he blamed us.

"non-criminal city ordinance"
Is that like getting a nasty letter from the HOA.
To be clear, I'm not saying violate a ordinance; but what is the penalty for curiosity / information sake.

Not sure on Boulder yet, but Denver's new CCW rules violations will result in a ticket and $50 civil fine for first time occurrence, which is good for somebody who "makes a mistake". Fines go up to $999 after couple repeats. Misdemeanors and felonies are set by the state, not local communities, and there can't be much difference between the towns in punishments. If it would pass legal muster, you know very well that Denver would have pushed for making carry in one of the restricted zones with a permit the same as carry without a permit (or worse, since people with permits would be a preferred legal target, and tend not to be members of privileged demographic groups).

I know that there are at least 5 of us that carry during services. I have seen them all in the CHL re-qualification classes. I am a Lector, but not a pastor of any kind. None of the other 4 are either.

A few of our members come armed, including myself, there’s no formal plan or anything. We certainly could and should do better but we’re a small church ( +\- couple dozen in attendance any given Sunday) and most people there fine with the status quo.

Because of this shooting it’s likely in the near future we’ll start locking the door when the greeter leaves and after a couple - three months that’ll likely stop.
Like I said we can and should do better, but I’m honestly answering the question. It just not a big priority with most of the folks there.

We have several who carry, including a LEO. I don't. Our doors are locked during services. Anybody trying to break a door down would be met by a very judgemental reception committee.

In a new church. Concealed carry is OK - they prefer no open carry. A security team is in place. Particulars are known only to leadership and members of the team. I was visiting a church that had emergency "what to do in the case of an intruder" instructions in the pews.

Dunno, haven't been to in over a decade and so not plan on going back.

However, my grandad es el Guarda Templos, and he carries a G2C. I think my uncle might too, but I can't say. For Catholics, churches are too sacred to carry firearms in, basically considered a safe zone.

As a matter of fact, it's common courtesy to turn in your pocket knives when you visit any altars in Mexico. I turned in my knife when I went to La Santa Muerte's altar , and got it right back when I left.

My place of worship went through a massive restructure during Covid. Most of the leadership including prayer leader were changed. So these experiences are two years ago and what I know of now.

Yes, 2 years ago we had a security team. I was a policy changing and consulting member of that team. All our names were known to the congregation so people knew who could be approached for help. We met once a month for board room meetings to talk about changes "on paper." And then we had follow up meetings that were principle based like going to a maneuver range or first aid. We did not, emphasis on not, focus solely on security. We also practiced things like fire drills, evacuations for tornados, how to deal with protestors (we had a lot of those for reasons I won't mention), first aid, and multiple ways to contact first responders in the event of an emergency. The town police chief always sat in on the board meetings. Because every week he provided 1-2 off duty officers (paid by congregation funds) to be at the primary entrance.

Now, the prayer leader is a firearms advocate, but has dissolved the security team. He also does not endorse anyone in the congregation to be armed, but does not enforce it with pat downs or metal detectors. I know of a few former team members who still carry, but do not do so publicly. As a result, many of the security measures suggested and implemented by my team were no longer followed. Even something simple like having only one entrance to the building are no longer followed. Sadly, as a direct result of poor security planning, violence against the center has gone up and active membership has gone to a third of what it was pre-Covid.

I don't volunteer at my church so I don't have any knowledge of whatever security plans they may have in place.

For me I sit in the overflow sanctuary close to the emergency exit. If anything happens I'm heading for the door.
