I want to talk about his loads and your personal options on them.

45 acp 7.5 unique with 200-215 grain swc lead

38 special 5 grains red dot 158 grain lead swc

Yes I know current data does not support this or any full power loading of any cartridge. I have books in the last 40 years which do and I am ok with that as no real advancement has been made to change these powders.

Let's talk and squawk

I never got into hot loading. 7.0-7.5 gr Unique was widely circulated for .45 Auto; Lyman 44th is up to 7.2 with either 200 or 225 gr cast bullet.

I don't know where Cooper came up with Red Dot for heavy .38 Special.
Lyman 44th Maximum was 5.4 gr Unique for a 158 cast and there have been several barge loads at 5.0. But Unique, not Red Dot.

Same, very few times do I even approach maximum published data. It’s all about accuracy for me, if a few more FPS or Foot Pounds are needed I grab a bigger gun. Never try to make something it’s not!

All I can say about the unique load for 45 acp is it is with the pressure boundaries of Sammi when pressure tested according to a ballistic expert over on cast bollits. I am not afraid of what a insurance edited data book does not say, if it's with the pressure it's good in my book.

I keep reading up on the 38 special, alot of people are saying their load is 4.5 grains and they are pushing 1000 fps. Hot load by all means

I am going to load both and try them out

Cooper was pretty sharp. If he were alive today, he wouldn’t be shooting either of those loads. So why talk about them?

A more relevant question: What would Cooper be shooting today? In 45 ACP, Universal. In 38 Special, CFE Pistol.

personal options

Mine is , your post requires this warning.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

I do play with heavy loads, IF your gonna try it, work up carefully and primarly watch what your GUN does, not what the cases look like......From personal experience and quick loads prediction of 20Kpsi, id be leary of that unique load in an unmodified 45 handgun. Even in a modified handgun id expect it to ware rather quickly, and careful examination of the firearm should be undertaken regularly

I recorded a load (2013) that is a 225gr hard cast FP and 6.4gr Unique good for 869 fps from a Commander length bbl. That 7.5gr combo sounds fairly warm.

We don’t encourage intentionally and knowingly overloading calibers here at THR, especially just for kicks and with no real warning per the rules. There are plenty of places where they don’t seem to care, might try one of them.
