I was planning on loading up some .357 loads with HS6 but when I checked my primer inventory I found myself lacking in mag primers which I've always used with HS6. I do still have standard SPP in both Winchester and CCI flavors but I'm reluctant to use them if the results will be less than ideal. My prefered load is 125gr jhp pushed by 10.3gr HS6 and lit by a magnum SPP. What say you all?

Im using hs6 in my 9mm, I know not the same animal, but only use cci or win spp. Of course my charge is only 6.0 gr but I haven't had any type of issue.with ignition. I'd suggest you try a few with each of the primers you have on hand and see if you notice a big difference.

I have never been able to measure the difference (velocity or accuracy) between Mag and nonMag primers in .357 with H110, which is quite a bit slower than HS6. I predict you will find no difference whatsoever, unless in the very cold, or underpowered.

Winchester SPP tends to be a little hotter as far as it matters but I’ve never really known HS-6 to be hard to light. I have noticed it’s a little position sensitive but hardly worth being bothered about.

I've used them in warm .38 Special loads fired in .357 guns with this powder and no issues. Loads were at or above .38 +P levels with 158 hard cast. Never used in .357 cases, but I suspect you'll be fine. I was using Rem and S&B SPP at the time.

While I have always gotten better results with a magnum primer when loading HS-6 you have to use what you have. As long as you don't download HS-6 you should be OK with a standard SPP just maybe not as good as you're used to.

"Reloading 101"; any time there is a component change, do another load work up, starting low ands working up. There is no danger with your prmer substitution but there may be minor changes in performance. If you have a chrony that's the best way to tell

I have basically the same load for 357 but use small pistol CCI primers instead of magnums. It’s a rather stout load for my uses, second only to my very hottest 2400 load with a 158 grain bullet. I haven’t shot terribly many but didn’t have any ignition trouble and accuracy was equal to my Hornady 148 grain HBWC loads using just a little W231.
