Hello all. I shoot in the creek behind my house as it’s the only safe place to do so. I have to carry in everything I need in a backpack or range bag and bring it back out again at day’s end.

Carrying bulky target stands or cardboard boxes down there is a huge pain. I am looking for something like a folding paper target stand that will fit inside a backpack or range bag. Even a 12” by 12” or so size would work.

Have had little luck so far. Everything seems to be giant silhouette targets or things like that. Also the stand needs to be lightweight, less than 10 lbs preferably.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I have an entire range set up at a friend's property but when I just want to jut down the railroad tracks a couple hundred yards away from the neighbors and to put a lil distance between the neighbors and the noise I'm making, I pretty much only take what I can carry so I take some 6ft garden stakes and some cardboard and then I space them out whatever the width of the cardboard and clamp the cardboard and targets to the stakes using lil hardware store clamps.

I can carry 6 garden stakes and afew pieces of cardboard with the clamps in one hand as I walk for a total of 3 target stands to transition back and fourth, range bag in my other hand. Pretty easy to haul in and pack out for a semi short distance....

I usually print some off of the internet. I always have some cardboard and a stapler in the truck. Really like to plink claybirds but they frown on it at the range. Said that it plays havoc with the mower.

A pvc pipe frame? Either threaded or non will work as a collapsible stand.

Hard press-fit the non threaded pipe of you don’t want to make it permanent with glue.

Stay safe.

If the property belongs to the OP, my suggestion is to build a target stand. A couple good T-posts and sheet of plywood will last a while.

Some friends and I shoot a lot on my other friends property. He let us build a berm. We have one plywood-tpost stand as mentioned above and a steel plate rack with about a dozen steel plates of various sizes.

If we had to pack in targets every time we shoot, I’d buy IDPA stands and wood slats and IDPA cardboard targets. Light and easy.

Thanks guys looking for a paper target to measure groups. I like the idea of the political sign. There’s little to no wind in the creek so it shouldn’t blow down. Plus, the sand there should make setting it up easy.

The creek is owned by a farmer who lives a mile or so away. Have shot there for years and always back out everything including empty shells.

For stands- The sign frames for realtors/.elections work well. Also the heavy(er) steel things that stab in the ground in your yard to hang plants or little flags. Mrs Fl-NC has 40-11-dozen of them, which I imagine she buys at Lowes. Either of these things can be left at the site where you shoot, just bring your targets. Targets can be hung with something like plastic binding clips. I save/scrounge carboard boxes from purchases of whatever we buy, as well as take large boxes from my neighbor's yards on trash day when I see them put out, then I just cut them to a smaller size with a box cutter. For smaller zero targets, I will buy 3x5 index cards and cut out 2" squares from the shoot n see targets you buy at wally world. For larger targets (like for a handgun) I will use the cheap paper plates that are worthless to eat out of. Either of these I will attach to my salvaged cardboard with a staple gun. I hate spending lots of $ on things I am just going to shoot full of holes then throw away.

I like to take 6" sections of 2" conduit, flatten and trim one end of each piece and drive the flattened ends of each pair into the ground about two feet apart until they are almost flush with the ground.
Then, when I want to shoot, I stick a piece of 1" PVC pipe, broom stick or conduit into each hole and attach whatever target I want to use today.
When you're done, pull down target, pull up sticks and leave.

PVC like this one that I copied from elsewhere or a rebar stand. A long piece and a short piece of rebar welded to make a narrow "Y" and do this twice. Shove cardboard backer in the Y slot. See my cheesy drawing.

I’m jealous of anyone who can shoot right in their own backyard. I have to go to a range or find a friend with some land. The lack of places to shoot outdoors has caused my young son to lose interest in shooting with me. He got bored with the range after a few visits. It sucks.

I bought a wooden Radio Flyer with oversize tires to haul my range gear in and out of the remote area I shoot at, including 6 ft long 1x2s for cardboard USPSA targets, and a folding 2x4 ft table. It works like a champ.
