Ever Reached a Point

Where there wasn’t a “next gun” on your list? I feel like I might be there. I know several members here are shooters more than collectors. I fall somewhere in the middle between shooter and accumulator. I don’t want guns that I won’t shoot, but there’s always been a “next gun” for me. I’ve got money from selling a few guns lately and the rule between my wife and I has always been that gun money remains gun money, as in, it doesn’t get used to pay the bills and such unless there is a dire emergency. I think I’ve reached a point though where I just want to shoot what I have. I’ve picked up several new rifles in the last year and a half and haven’t really had time or ammo to really get used to any of them yet. Maybe something is wrong with me. I should probably schedule a doctor’s appointment.
I'm beyond that point. More like I want to lose a few and gain a few others.

I'm kind of there, this is my first post on THR in probably a year and a half. The societal upheaval covid brought on knocked me completely out of my groove, I probably have been to the range only 3 or 4 times since. There's always something that piques my interest, I don't have a Browning High Power, a Garand M1, a Broomhandle. These would be cool to have but would I shoot them much? I doubt it, I've hardly shot anything in the safe. I've actually considered passing a few family heirlooms along to the next generation.

Had a recent discussion with my wife, sometimes loud. Told her straight out that I had 30 when we got together and I'll have 30 again, problem is I buy something and a family member needs it so it is gifted can't seem to break the8 gun mark only 2 are pistols, I have no shotgun, need one for turkeys.

A real good friend of mine crossed the river last winter , chronic health issues, kept on acquiring almost right to the end. After he was gone his survivors liquidated his collection in rapid order. Watching that happen was a sobering experience…

At 70 , with my game clock winding down , it is time to shoot what I have.

If they are ones I couldn’t live without, I already have a couple, just in case.

That said, I have bought guns just because I like the way they look and I was never a great fan of what some call “art”.

All they have to do these days is be mildly interesting or something I haven’t played with yet.

'Ever reached a point' Where there wasn’t a “next gun” on your list?

Maybe tomorrow, but not today.

It has been a few years since I went looking for something specific.
Not really looking for anything other than that cursed Colt rimfire
but always open to something (new or used) crossing my radar unexpectedly.

I thought I had about 5 weeks ago when I talked myself out of replacing my M&Pc 40 with a H&K P2000. Found myself fairly lost since then with nothing in particular to be on the hunt for. Then just last night It dawned on me that I can’t send my son into the woods this fall with a .270 or 30-06. “We” need a .308 I can download for or a 6.5 Creedmore (or one of the other lower recoil Whitetail options). I feel like I’ve found purpose in life again.

More seriously though, nothing wrong with sitting on the sidelines waiting for something to strike your fancy. If that “gun money” is burning a hole in your pocket buy something used to play with while you figure out what the next real need/gap is. While I haven’t practiced this often I hear you can convert them back to cash fairly easily. You gain some knowledge of different guns and learn a lot about what features you like/dislike.

Of course, not knowing you, you may have already been through hundreds of guns in this manner. If so disregard all the above and carry on.

Yep that's me! I don't even look at guns when I go into the gun stores anymore. The new guns just don't interest me anymore, I do look over the old guns but the prices give me a good laugh.
I have many safes & lockers full of guns, so many that in a months time I can't get half them to the range to give them a few rounds down range. I have my favorites that make it to the range more often but with the price of ammo or components I only get 20 to 30 rounds down range. It's nothing like the 200 to 300 rounds that I used to shoot in my half a day at the range shoot.
From what I see at the range in spent brass not to many others are doing a lot of shooting.

I too am at that point. The guns I have now are enough to keep me happy. I love to shoot and used to always want more guns. Funny you bring this up as it has been on my mind recently. If I were young again I am sure my attitude would be different.

I can honestly say that I am not in the market for a new firearm. Actually, I am thinking about selling some off because they take up space and I just never seem to shoot them.

Yeah. I figure that honestly 200-250 guns have passed through my safe over the last couple decades. I’ve pretty well figured out what I like and there aren’t any real gaps though I have been trying hard to find one.
You, however, definitely need a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor and probably both. That’s what I convinced myself of a while back and now I own three 6.5 CMs and a couple of 308s.

You think you are done, but you won't get off that easy.
Now you will start buying backup/2nd-string/3rd-string guns.

Or your hobby might take you in a different direction.
You might get into single actions and buy 8-10 of those, for example.
Or get into another caliber and buy 3-4 of those.

You can always buy ammo/accessories.
And you will...

Wait, what?!

:rofl:LOL!

Yes, 1st I've heard of this too!
They just announced it at the SHOT show-

I'm kind of getting there. I'm certainly plateauing on 'needs' and only looking at 'wants'. I am down to a handful of things I would really like to have, like a 6" Python, a Browning Citori, and uppers in various cartridges for my AR-10. I really wanted a Dan Wesson DWX, but it looks like that dream has vanished, like tears in rain.

Now I am starting to do math on enough ammo to last me for the rest of my life, and setting up each of my kids with the basics, and dedicating to more training.

It kind of ebbs and flows for me. I may go months without getting something new, then I may get a few things in a matter of weeks...or days in some cases. Really depends on where my attention is focused.

I don't feel like I own the best of anything, so there's always the potential to upgrade.

Then there are the outside influences that can either limit my ability to shoot certain things or point me in an entirely different direction. New circumstances invite new challenges. I gave up on giving up.
