Senators announce bipartisan agreement on gun proposals

My guess is that the Dems will insert a poison pill into the bill at the last minute, so that it loses all GOP support. That way the Dems can blame the GOP again for not supporting so called “common sense” gun laws. Otherwise, are too few issues for the Dems to run their campaign on this year, especially with the economy in the toilet.

That’s my worry. But I also think a lot of GOP will sign onto the poison pill as well, simply because they don’t want to be seen as “standing in the way of Progress, at such an historic, important, juncture.”

Exactly. Smart conservatives know that "things must change so that things can stay the same."
No such thing, if they change, they aren't the same, but you habitually post support for giving up something to save something, which is baloney, all it is is giving in, they simply ask for more the next time, you know, the thing(s) that you think you saved.

I like that they are feeling confidence in their win come November, to the point they don’t think they can hurt themselves. Sounds like Bush all over again…

Along these lines, what do 2A supporters ever gain in the area of gun rights? I'm genuinely asking because I don't know...there may be something, right? To me, it always (and I don't use that word lightly) seems like they shoot for the stars and we "compromise" down to the moon, but we rarely (if ever) actually gain anything. It's just "less bad".

I'm seriously disappointed in John Cornyn, but not for the first time. Perhaps one day soon he will be primaried. Can't happen soon enough.
He has passed his shelf life and should retire in dignity. But that is an outdated concept.

It's easy to "do something!"
Unfortunately, it is all too easy to do the wrong "something".

As usual, "common sense" legislation becomes "common nonsense".

I defer to Mark Twain: "Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself."
Wise man, in so many ways...

1. It has NOT passed the Senate. It is still just an agreement from a 20 Senator bipartisan committee. The article does report that it has a good chance of passing the Senate.

2. It has NOT passed the House. What passed the House is a completely different bill.

3. Biden has pledged to sign it if it makes it to his desk.

This is my understanding of where things stand too.

What this means is that we need to contact our senators, especially the 10 on the committee, to ensure that if/when a vote comes, that they do not vote for this BS. After the next event involving a gun, you can bet that the anti-gunners won’t say, “we are not looking for additional legislation since we passed something after Uvalde.” Instead, they will keep ramping up their calls until the 2A is a distant memory and they can target bows, knives, sticks, and eventually stones.

Disagree.

A list of Republican senators who outwitted the Democrats and secured political cover for Republicans going into the Midterms.

The proposed legislation is nothing but political theater.

I’m inclined to agree. Seems like a whole lot of nothing. “We need to do something! This is…well…something.”

One of the good things about the Donk’s grotesquely slavish media, is that even if they do jack, it will be heralded as Progress. So, their gullible base is appeased and we’re left to carry on as before. Considering how much peril these mass shootings could pose to the 2A, this milquetoast stuff is an encouraging sign that gun ownership in this country just may be impervious to serious attack at the Federal level.

I never let this pressure bother me.

It is also interesting to note that the pro-Second Amendment politicians are expected to Yield, but when do their opponents in the other party seem willing compromise on their ultimate, long-term demands (usually totally concealed)?

This is always very One-sided ;) and as some person stated days ago on CNN, they ultimately want to just get Rid of the Second Amendment, even if it takes 50 more years or whatever.

Such people don't care that thousands of men, women and also Mothers each year either must brandish (display / hold in their hands), or actually use a gun to defend themselves, sometimes including their Children.:scrutiny:...................

Some highlights from the NY Times.

Though it would not raise the age to buy assault rifles from 18 to 21, the plan would enhance background checks on those under 21 before they could take possession of a gun — perhaps the most significant element of the emerging measure.

The deal includes federal incentives for states to enact so-called red flag laws to seize guns temporarily from those deemed a threat to themselves and others. And in a long-sought change that has been opposed by Republicans in the past, it would also make it harder for those accused of domestic violence to obtain guns, adding dating partners to a prohibition that currently applies only to spouses.

The agreement still has to be turned into legislation, and failure to agree on the terminology and the exact reach of some of the provisions could prove difficult and still imperil the deal.

Just as I predicted, a list of the traitors in the senate:

  • John Cornyn of Texas
  • Thom Tillis of North Carolina
  • Susan Collins of Maine
  • Bill Cassidy of Louisiana
  • Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
  • Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania
  • Roy Blunt of Missouri
  • Richard Burr of North Carolina
  • Rob Portman of Ohio
  • Mitt Romney of Utah
Enjoy the new gun laws. Maybe do something more than vote, and finance endless summers for the NRA, next time.

JUST BEARS REPEATING THAT'S ALL. Birds of a feather, flocking together that's how I see it.

The friend of my enemy is...well, something. I don't really remember, but it's not goodo_O.

What in the world is DV TRO?

I read it to mean ''domestik violence'' and, ''temporary restraining order''

OK...so, as others here have stated, it has to go to the House. Where some INCORRECTLY think, for reasons of convenience, that it will NOT be amended. Or thinking, the amendments will be rejected by the Senate.

NOT SO ! !

These turnabout Pompeians will then vote FOR IT, well, we couldn't turn down XY & Z, just because the House added U & A.

And expect some weirdo stuff stuffed into it also, like, an extra $456778888 billion for illegals, or for teaching your kids how you really hate them. Other etc. , but, DEFINATELY some pork spending added!

I might as well stand outside and---well, spit into the wind as when it comes to contacting my senator. My vote means nothing to him as he knows the northern part of the state will vote for him. This is NM and he checks both boxes that get you elected in this state.

And expect some weirdo stuff stuffed into it also,
How about slipping in "some weirdo stuff" like repeal of the Hughes Amendment? Any one of those 10 Republican senators has enormous negotiating power right now. Why aren't we pushing for a pro-gun addition, rather than blindly opposing everything? This is why the pro-gun side never gets anything, and is always forced into concessions -- it's called failure of imagination.

Well, I live in Pennsylvania and Toomey is my Senator until the mid terms when he retires.
I consider him a traitor for signing on to this piece of trash legislation. He is no better than that piece of vermin Arlen Spector that used to be a RINO but switched parties in to become a card carrying member of the Communist party.
Unfortunately, in November, residents of Pennsylvania will have to choose between a drug addict Democrat(Fetterman) and a life long leftist who now claims to be a conservative(Mehmet Oz). Whichever one wins will either be another surefire leftist(Fetterman) or a RINO at best (Oz), provided he doesn't drop all pretenses and switch to the Communist party just like Spector did.
Either way, Pennsylvania will be saddled with two leftist Senators because Casey is a guaranteed lockstep Democrat leftist party functionary who has never had an original thought in his life.

I feel your pain, we've got Chris Murphy & Blumenthal here (Ct) and plan on moving before long.

I just don't understand any federal gun control issues. There is an old saying "Don't let the fox in the hen house."

No lectures needed on this forum for what the 2nd amendment really stands for. It is not about hunting or target shooting. It's about the right of self-protection & protection from federal government over-reach. Understanding this, the ATF is unconstitutional, at least the "F" part is. So called "gun-control" is none of the Fed's business - it's the states' business. If a state screws it up, then bouncing it up the ladder of the judicial system will determine if the state is violating the constitution or not. If California wants to outlaw every firearm, that's fine, it will never stand up in court. Our tragedy in Texas is still under investigation & we will deal with future prevention with what we know will work - without federal intervention. Most Texan know the difference between an assault weapon & an AR15. If we went to war with AR15's we would lose in 10 minutes. They also know that most all protective agencies from the police on up use AR15's as a standard for long-arm protection. Are we going to deny the American citizen that same parity?
