Bullet accuracy

CAN SOMEONE PASS THE POPCORN!

I’m enjoying this one!
I partially concur with opinions on both sides.
Some elements of truth on both sides.

At present Varminterror is ahead.
But I do want to know where these “cheap/inexpensive” tipped bullets can be found.

You’re whining about pricing - which was incorrect, and then telling lies about ballistics and BS about expansion performance… then recommending MORE EXPENSIVE bullets as alternatives… foolish and ignorant…
I believe we should provide data and facts to counter "ignorance". Please keep my thread from becoming a personal bashing event....

There ARE some exceptionally accurate bonded bullets out there, but largely, there are more steps being done - each with their own inherent process variabilities - and any of these are exclusively designed for hunting, such the greatest extent of precision is not necessarily mandated for these bullets. NABLR’s and standard NAB’s come to mind for me - likely the most accurate hunting bullets I’ve ever encountered.

But money being spent where it brings value, bonded match bullets just don’t align. Money in process to improve uniformity in bonded bullets just adds cost, for unwarranted improvement in precision. Equally, for the precision shooter, the added expense of bonding process in a match bullet brings no value, even if precision were equivalent, so why spend it?

The F Class guys tell me everything affects everything, and they were actually trimming/chamfering the nose of their match bullets! I ran one insignificant test, trying to see if bullet nose mutilation made any difference. I was given an extra 300 yard sighter shot, due to some sort of delay. Conditions had not changed so I took out my Leatherman multi tool and crushed the nose of my 168 SMK in all directions. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Then shot it, using the same dope as the first two sighter shots. It was a pinwheel X at 300 yards. I have been told, a scratch on the base will cause a bullet go go all wonky, but bullet tip damage is of no consequence.

Except for those shooting at a 1000 yards, where everything affects everything.

The Remington bronze points came out one year after their #740.....

I have one, without a "tipped" spitzer,...... well,it's one heckuva nice single shot. So tips aren't just about looks.

*30-06,I load RN 150's that are designed for 30-30 velocity/pressure at starting book loads for the '06. Feed like greased ball bearings and kill deer like a lightning bolt.

I like rn rifle bullets in old military rifles that have giraffe throats. At a minimum a bullet that is jump tolerant helps...

he said bonded bullets are less accurate because the process requires heating and somehow that hinders the process of precisely forming jackets.
“When bonding the jacket to the core, both the core and jacket are heated. This anneals the copper jacket that is not yet to shape. Being now dead soft, when the bullet is swaged in the dies it doesn’t react in the usual manner, leading to offset squishing and heavy areas. But it’s more important to be soft at long range and still stay together up close, those are the compromises.”

That was how it was explained to me by an acquaintance. I have zero firsthand knowledge of how a bonded bullet is actually made.

To the point of tipped-points and pointing tips…
Tipped hollow points won’t clog with fur and become a FMJ.
A tipped bullet style has a more consistent B.C.
If this was not important, there wouldn’t be meplat trimmers and bullet pointing dies. Competitors will sacrifice a tiny bit of B.C. By trimming the hollow points shorter, to gain more consistency by pointing every bullet identically.

And, good luck pulling that tip out without bullet damage. While maybe not the same thing, I tried removing the tips from some 50 caliber FTXs to see if I could salvage them for my Deagle. Nope.
Dang things were hard to cut off even. (And they were still too long.)

I am a cup and core kind of guy. I rarely shoot past 300 yards and rarely faster than 2800 fps in either .06 or 2.70. I did cut some plastic tips off some SSTs once and they shot like s*** between 100 to 200 yards. I couldn't get the tips completely out either. I average .75 MOA which is good enough for my hunting. SSTs are great in a Garand. But everyone else wants a magic bullet that will do it all. It's good for a booming business(pun intended) and it's good for bragging over a beer. But some people take it too far, (pun intended). The bottom line...there is give and take in internal and external ballistics, and ya just have to know what your limit is.
My son gut shot a deer last year and it took him 4 hours to find it. Now he wants to shoot ELD-X bullets. Will that make a difference? ......Its a magic bullet; someone, somewhere said so. His BC will double and SD is never better. And he will be shooting faster than ever before.................
