is this Weatherby Vanguard fair priced?

Would you pay $1100 (after tax and shipping) for a Weatherby Vanguard S2 RC Bolt Action Rifle .308 Win 22" Heavy Barrel with Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14 scope? For the same money, what would be your choice and why? Thanks in advance for your opinion.
 
Might be worth it was checking, weatherby website says retail from them 911.00 for heavy barrel. Burris ff2 4.5 -14 is available at several online e retailers for 189.00 or less , the burris is a decent piece of glass I have one ony rem 700 and shoot out to 300 meters regularly. Can see bullet he's as well, usually, at distance with aging eyes.

The rifle does come with a dub moa garrentee, might opt for a win xpr depending on what I planned to use it for.

Does it seem like 1100 is a bit high for that rifle?: YES.

Will it outshoot and outlast a good number of other 1100 dollar combos? YES.
 
That is a good rifle and a nice inexpensive optic, but significantly more than I would pay.

I have a 223 Vanguard Heavy Barrel, cost me $400 on clearance. It's topped with a 4.5-14x42 Fullfield E1 (a step up from the Fullfield II) that cost me $150. So, they're asking about double what I paid for a similar though not identical setup. Even without catching mine on clearance, their asking price still seems significantly high for a used Vanguard.
 
No way at that price. And I really like the howa/Weatherby.

I own Savage, Howa/Weatherby, Marlin, Mauser, Thompson Center and Ruger bolt action rifles. All are good in their way. Im partial to the Ruger 77.
Find what you like and go from there.

Plan to spend $300+ for a decent optic and enjoy the quest.
 
Some things to consider. That rifle is not your standard Vanguard, it has a $320 Bell and Carlson tactical stock on it vs a cheap $30 tupperware stock. It also has a heavy target barrel and an improved trigger and when they were made MSRP was $1300. It's worth a bit more than one of the budget Vanguards.

The FF-II scopes have been discontinued, but that scope sold new for a bit over $200 and they were highly regarded. A much better scope than the Burris E-1 and many people rated that scope better than a Leupold VX-2. That is my assessment. It has been replaced by the Burris FF-IV which is also a step down in quality.

When you look at the features $1100 OTD isn't terrible. But I'd still rather spend $700 and get a Tikka and a $400 scope.
 
I would not pay that, but mainly because I have no desire to own a heavy barreled 308 range gun that I can’t replace the barrel on. I would not hunt with it either because it’s just an extra 2lbs worth of steel on the pointed end that I don’t need.

Are you sure the Fullfield IIs were discontinued? They're still listed on their site and are not marked as discontinued.

And I thought E1s were generally seen as an equal scope, but with a better eyepiece setup since the whole thing didn't turn.

I don’t think the fullfield II was discontinued. I prefer the E1 over the FF-II as they have a better eyepiece and much much improved turrets. The FF-IV is made in China and are trash.

I recently researched the Howa 1500 & looked at the differences between it & the Vanguard. I may be wrong but I believe the Vanguard uses a different stock, a different bolt & a different barrel. If I recall correctly the Howa bot has 90 degree throw & the Vanguard has something like 70 degree. The safety on the Howa is 3 position, the safety on the Vanguard is 2 position. I believe I read Weatherby uses their own barrels.

The standard Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa 1500 upgraded to include a fluted bolt with pressure relieving ports (in case of case rupture), a stiffer more ergonomic stock, and an upgraded trigger. The Vanguard RC has even more upgrades, including a bedded stock and a heavier barrel. I think the bolt throw on the Howa and the Weatherby Vanguard is the same (but on other Weatherbys, like the Mark V, the bolt throw is 60 degrees).

Your observations are exactly why I'm interested in this particular rifle. And I am also interested in the Tikka, but for this particular purchase I want a rifle with an internal magazine with the largest capacity possible. One thing that might account for my interest in both the Tikka and the Howa/Vanguard is that both are Sako designs.

I’m a big Vanguard fan have .243 and 30-06 Sporters. Daughter has a synthetic .243 Vanguard, son and son-law have 30-06 Synthetics.

There is a wide price range from the least to the most expensive Vanguard. I’d rather have a Winchester M70 than a $1k Vanguard.

When Weatherby brought out the S2, the trigger was a big improvement over previous model Vanguards and much better than Howa 1500’s. The stocks on the synthetic were better than 1500’s. A couple of years ago Howa started using the Vanguard trigger.

The Vanguard safety is a three position, or at least mine is.

Thank you for correcting me. Interestingly enough I went back & did a search again. I found at least one site that says it is 2 position. The Vanguard was updated a couple of years ago. I wonder if they messed up or it was changed.
 
My son picked up a NOS vanguard 7mm rem mag straight comb wood stock “classic?” for $400. But those deals don’t come around to often.
