Is the .45 now a thing of the past?

A new THR record! Guy joins the forum and within his first 4 posts, on his first day as a member, touts Glocks and black plastic over 1911s! (Is it April Fool's Day? Or has there been a rupture in the space-time continuum and a BBB post from 1994 somehow got through?)

Here are a few penetration tests of stacked newsprint to give you an idea how various ammo performs. .45 is pretty low penetration. Compare it to 9mm and nylon jacketed 9mm.

.22 short 5/8 inch of newsprint (snubnose)
.22 quiet 1 inch of newsprint (snubnose)
.22 HVHP 2-3/8 inches of newsprint (snubnose)
.22 Stinger 3-1/4 inches of newsprint (snubnose)
.380 ball 3-3/8 inches of newsprint (Beretta)
.38 SP Federal ball 4 inches of newsprint (snubnose)
.357 Hornady plastic tip magnum 3-3/4 inches of compressed kraft paper (snubnose) (a)
.357 Hornady plastic tip magnum 6 inches of compressed kraft paper (Ruger 4" barrel) (a)
9mm Hornady 6-7/8 inches of newsprint (Beretta)
9mm xxxxxxx nylon jacket 10 inches of newsprint (Beretta)
.45 Auto ball 4 inches of newsprint (Colt 1911)

And I'll start worrying about .45 ACP penetration when the bad guys start hiding behind piles of newspapers.

If only he were even handed with bullet selection.

Me, I chose the platform and shoot what I choose. Doesn’t need to be a 1911 or .45 ACP for that matter, just needs to agree with me. I’m man enough to admit my K9 is what I’d be reaching for in the middle of the night for HD.

Try as you might, you cannot make fully expanded 9mm bigger..
Hence why the bigger cals will never disappear.

45 may not be the most popular selling, but it’s also difficult to see it becoming irrelevant. I’ve got plenty of 9mm and my last two purchases have been 1911’s in 45 acp.

And I’ll be adding to that total, too. 1911 in 45 acp is a joy to shoot in my opinion.

As I've said before, I like a 45 for in the house defensive situations. For carry outside the house and potential shots at longer distances, I like my 10mm 150 gr JHP @ 1500 fps. But that's just me.

Well as the discussion has shown, 45ACP is here for the long haul! In fact, if/when I buy another handgun, I have decided it will be a Glock 30SF Gen 4! They are only like $487 (dealer cost) from Chattanooga Shooting Supplies so I'm pretty tempted. I'm really not a Glock guy to be frank (I think people hype them up too much), but I do like that they make a semi auto light weight compact 45acp product... I already have a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 so I have my 1911 needs covered there.

OKIE, I have the same 1911-A1. Probably my favorite handgun to shoot. .45 anything ain't going anywhere except down range.
Yep, it has seemingly NO recoil, even with hot 230gr+p Federal HST stuff... The first time I shot it I was like, "Really, that's it?!" Everyone on the internet says 45acp will break your wrist off lol...

Bill's trying to make money. Always follow the money.

By switching his carry caliber and talking about it in one video? I guess…

edit: unless you mean by making the edc X9 and selling 9mm 1911s then sure. But that wasn’t what I was referencing.

When someone as pragmatic as Ayoob is about defensive use of pistols takes a position which caused you to question his judgement, it might be time to question what credentials you have which would be more valid than his in coming to that opinion
Well id ask retire the 1911 from what? Its been pretty much retired from service.
But when you have multiple manufacturers pumping out as many 1911's they can, and they keep selling as fast as possible, id say his statement was made just for clicks.
Sad
