twenty pound AR

I have ARs weighing from 4lbs (AR15 pistol) to 15 lbs (AR10s) fitted with extra weights for long range shooting. A lot depends on the length and profile of the barrel.

I'm old enough that my AR in service was the M16A1, A2, occasionally with an M203 on it. No other doodads except a sling need apply. I've seen guys cloning different military setups with lasers, lights, grips, ACOGs that look to weigh about 12 lbs. Whatever makes him happy at this point. He's young. I remember when I was young and considered getting to tote the Pig around to be a good day.

My first AR build followed a few 'hangers on' but quickly realizing simplicity is it's own reward, I quickly shed about 90% of it. Most of my AR's wear irons and a web USGI M1 Carbine sling.

One the funniest range incidents I've seen. A young man shows up for a tactical match. Tact clothing. Opens up his case and there it is, a mall ninja AR15. It has a scope, 45° iron sights, light, laser, vertical front grip. He proceeds to shoot a dismal score. Looks down at his gun with a questioning look. Match director who is usually a really nice guy walks up and says "maybe if you take half that crap off your rifle it'll shoot better" (I doubt it). We all did what we could not to all break out in laughter.

20 lbs he wont feel any recoil. :p
Yeah a Noreen BN408 which is an AR based semi auto 408 Cheytac rifle weighs 23lbs from the factory, so it's not unheard of for a factory rifle to weigh that much. They are like $14k lol so no thanks. But I do want their BN36X3 AR in 270 Winchester which is "only" $2800 MSRP. Like if I had to get rid of all my guns and get just one gun that would be the one I got lol. Oh and the 20rd box mags are $100 a piece lol.

I find it comical. The Mall Ninjas hanging the lights, lasers, front grips, extra this, extra that off their AR... Funniest is when you see them with pig stickers on the end, LOL! Because an AR with an M9 Bayo is EXTRA deadly! Hilarious watching these tokens wait for their “SHTF war”, for they are Navy Seals in their own minds.

I had a buddy that was always trying to find ways to lighten he AR hunting rifle. I swear that every time he found a way to lighten it, he found something new and heavier to hang on it.

I do NOT run a lightweight AR hunting rifle. I run an 18" heavy barrel, fairly heavy (as it was one of the best at the time of purchase) thermal optics, MDVR (mini digital video recorder), brass catcher, sling, and buttstock saddle for an external power supply. The weight does help cut down on recoil and improves the quality of video shot for my hunts. Everything on the rifle is "mission critical" to operation. I don't carry accessories I don't use on a regular basis.

Crew served comes to mind. So much for the light infantry concept.

My main prairie dog rifle is an AR-15 with a 26” heavy barrel and a big scope chambered in 204 Ruger. It tips the scales at 12-13 pounds empty.

I joke it is a “crew served” prairie dog rifle. Definitely not a walk-about rifle and primarily used from a fixed position.

All of my AR-15’s have just one set of sights and no other extraneous accessories. I like to keep them simple.

Check out Iraq 8888 videos, put everything they had in the shop on one lol.
I forgot all about that guy. He was the one who shot a couple thousand rounds through a S&W M&P Sport 2 on full auto. It caught on fire and still wouldn't quit :D

I think he tried it with a Colt or a Ruger and it didn't come near the S&W round count before becoming inoperable.

Thanks for that reminder, Troy

Think it was a higher end ar seems they all fail from the gas tube blowing out.

My AR15 match gun used to weigh about 11lbs. It carries a 26" bbl, Alum handguard, lead barrel weight, RPA rear sight, Medisha front riser. It used to have a lead wedge weight in the buttstock but I sacrificed that for an adjustable stock for 3 position precision/comfort.
I don't really know what my Les Tam sling weighs, maybe a pound or so?

I tried extra weight in the stock and hand guard for my Service Rifle AR-15 but decided it was not worth the effort. I'm not sure what the top competitors are doing in that regard but it did not work for me.

I dont see why anybody needs a rifle setup with irons, optic, optic magnifier, 45° offset irons (along with offset reflex sight), PEQ, light, foregrip, etc....... some people really go overboard.

Imo, all that is needed in a defensive carbine is an optic or irons, sling and a good white light. This is about as fancy as I ever intend to get. IMG_20220309_190819.jpg

My first AR build was a straight copy of an M16-A2 with the exception of a heavy 1-9 twist barrel. In semi-auto of course. My latest has a dot sight that folds down so I can see the iron sights.

A low power scope, sling and possibly a light or bipod, depending on what I'm doing with it.It seems that the more junk that gets screwed fast to a firearm simply makes for more screws to come loose. When it comes time to use it under stress, simplicity is invaluable.
