I know, I've seen a couple of these threads, and they get closed because people don't know yet; they are researching things still. That's fine, I just have something I'd like examined when you look it all over.

The scope of the Red Flag laws, is that going to be limited to people you know, or come into interactions with? Or is it broader?

I just had a silly little thought- online ammo purchases, and shippers. I just had to return a case of Geco 9mm for the recall, I contacted Fedex to determine how exactly to ship this back. The lady (Fedex) I got on the phone was very helpful, but when she transferred me over to someone else to schedule my pickup, she specifically told me not to tell that next person what the package was, as it would make him "nervous".
That made me wonder-

If Fedex can get nervous about shipping ammo, can they also get nervous about people who receive multiple ammo shipments? Can someone say "uh oh, that person has gotten 4 cases this year, that's a lot and I better report it?" It sounds crazy, but again I have no idea what would constitute the limits of a red flag.

Thanks for anyone who's reviewing things, who might come across this notion.

From what I have seen, there's no possible way to answer this question right now. The new gun control bill has incentive $$$ for States that pass red flag laws, and contains some standards for them. I have not seen anything in the federal law that says who will be allowed to file them. So each of the 50 states would get to make that decision on its own.

What a very strange thing. Anyway, you've made a good point and we'll need to keep an eye out for this. And by "this," I mean "turning FedEx, UPS, etc., into 'mandated reporters' when it comes to ammo purchases." At this time, I know of nothing in the law that does that.

As noted above, each state that wants them will pass their own laws, and you'll have to find out on a case-by-case basis how each of them will work. I do think that it's probably a safe bet that anti-gun states will craft laws that are more easily abused.

Sans forced confiscation Illinois has most controls progressive love. We’ve had red flags for 3 plus years now. Am not hearing of abuses yet. I for one do not talk to anyone in the neighborhood we moved to four years ago about anything to do with firearms. I removed any reference to them from my vehicle. After 50 years with a FOID card, its just not worth becoming a test case.

As a guess, with US$750 million of "free" cash being waved around, all the States will make application for the grants, even the ones with RFL. Now, how many States will actually "do" anything with the grants, is a different matter (and not one historically closely examined by either grantors nor grantees).

The cash is meant for both RFL and "mental health" stuff. US$750 / 2 / 50 is only US$7.5 million apiece per state, which is not very much federal money at all, given the expense of government "stuff."

To my (jaundiced) eye, that's about enough for a State to go "yeah, our RFL is good enough, after we took all the Directors to a Retreat in St Marten's with the money." Or for another State to go, "After our Retreat to Cabo San Lucas, we determined we needed more money to consider the issue..."
