Can anyone tell me the date of manufacture of a Benjamin Franklin pump air rifle, MODEL 340 in .22 caliber? The quantity stated of manufacture is 1,300,XXX. The whole gun appears to be painted with a flat black coating and it has a walnut stock with a foil emblem on the left side of the stock. The emblem says American Walnut, the H R with a pellet between the two characters and at the bottom
Benjamin Air Rifle Co.
Was the pump seal, which appears to be black plastic or maybe hard rubber to be lubricated? Can't find an operator's manual for it on the internet. It's interesting that there is no safety on the rifle and the shooter has to fully pull back on the bolt handle in order to cock the trigger either before or after the forand is used to pump up the pressure. I was able to site the gun in shooting 1.5 inch groups 1/3 inch low at 25 meters with 4 to six pumps. Anyone has recommendation for lubrication. The gun has been sitting in a closet for over 10 years without maintenance or being shot.

My Grandfather had a Benjamin 342 model, that based on post above dates to 1975 or 76. It hung in my grandfathers non-climate controlled stairway that led from the house to the garage/basement from then until 2002 when I inherited it. While it should probably have had some, to my knowledge his rifle has never had any maintenance done to it in all of that time. I actually shot it last week to deal with some garden pest and it still functioned without a hitch. I've been nothing but impressed with it's robustness.

I also ran across this link which has some interesting info.

If your gun is a .22cal it is a model 342. It should have a safety at the back of the air tube that is slid forward or back. Always cock the gun before pumping.
