We'd need the partial serial, normally the first four of it, as well as whether it square or round butt and the actual model number. For example, mine is a Model 10-5 with a Square Butt, D6 serial. This puts it at 1972 (if i recall correctly).

S&W Mod 10 . How can I date this?
Very carefully. Ask her father nicely, take a bath first, and don't expect her to put out on the first couple of dates. :D:D

Seriously, the serial number will allow approximate dating, as stated above. The SN is on the bottom of the butt frame on ALL S&W revolvers, and you can look inside the yoke cut as well, but not all models and years will have it there. Inside the yoke cut, you usually do find the model and series (dash) number, which is also nice to have handy when referring to your revolver in discussion, as there can be quite a few differences between series. If you don't feel comfortable splashing the whole SN out in the open, just post the letter and first 3 or 4 digits, and x-out the last ones, such as D1234xx. If it is made after 1982, it will have a 3-letter prefix and 4 numbers, like ABC1234. They are more difficult to pin the date down. S&W uses the "ship date", or the date the gun left the factory, as its "birthday". You can get this date from the S&W Historical Foundation with a Letter of Authenticity, but it costs $100 to get it and there's about 4-6 months backlog on them. Anyone with a Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson can get you an approximate production date within a year or two from the SN.
