If the photo in the article posted doesn't tell you everything you need to know about CA I don't know what to tell you.

As for the question it seems like it certainly would be, although I'm no attorney.

I think if I were a gun owner in CA I'd be keeping my head on a swivel 24/7 until I found another state to move to.

Sadly, if this happened in the Department of Justice of a state with competent politicians, bureaucrats and administrators, lots of heads would immediately roll.

Alas, since it's California, they'll all get promoted or reelected and get big pay raises.

I filled out a lot of those DOJ registration forms upon buying firearms when I lived in SoCal...and since we still own property down there, guessin' my info is floating around as well.

I don't live in that state, thank heavens... My usual response when asked for personal information by most outfits is not to comply unless there's no way around it... and actually get just a tad "creative" with my responses... if at all possible (and if no legal penalties apply... ).

A quick for instance is that for some years, ever since I signed up for Facebook (a mistake in itself...) they had my birthday showing me to be 116 years of age...

Will not suggest to anyone that they follow my example - but I remain highly skeptical about providing personal information - to anyone unless I'm absolutely forced to... In today's world my response is less and less possible, unfortunately...

How did the information wind up in a database, when the process of buying a gun is just a paper trail available to BATF?

Bet you loved when people did the same to you in FI's.....

This is my concern every time such information is "required". I am assured that it will be safeguarded, then I read about the federal government employee database breach, the credit reporting breaches, and the NSA and SCOTUS leaks. I would provide inaccurate or obsolete information, but at my age can't remember what I supplied.

Several states have permits for all firearms where all your firearms are registered with the city or state. Back when I lived in NYC I had the rifle/shotgun permit and the hand gun target permit. I had to submit paperwork to the city with all the details on my guns before I could legally possess them.

I want to say NYS has a database of firearms owners that is available in someway to the general public. Several years ago an anti gun reporter posted the names and addresses of many gun owners in Nassau Country since that was "news worthy"

Sounds like a good " Class Action" suit to me ... must be some kind of law prohibiting leakage of this nature .
The AG had better hope I'm not on the jury because in this case ... leaking that information to the general public is W-R-O-N-G !!! And that YaHoo needs to pay for doing things that damage the public .

Why can the leftist leak/do anything and never be questioned about it ... do laws only apply to the right wingers ... and Donald Trump ?

Oops that's an unfortunate accident we are deeply saddened by this lapse of judgment by a low level employee that's no longer working for this office......

That's the kind of apology you're gonna get there will not be any grand law suits.
