What is the LEAST fun gun you ever fired, one that hurt you

My most unpleasant and Least "Fun Gun" to shoot would be my Astra Model 600 9mm. On a good day, and these were few and far between, I could get through maybe 50 rounds before my hand was done shooting for the rest of the week.

A few other straight blowback guns that I was never very fond of either were the "new" Mauser HSc in .380, the Walther PPKs in .380, and the Walther PP in .32.

A 400 is equally bad.
Oddly, I quite enjoy my 600, and the couple buddies who've shot mine didn't report any ill effects.

I concur though, the PPK and HsC are miserable.

I had one of the Makarov pistols for a while. That gun recoiled more than it should have. It wasn't horrible, just more than I expected from such a low powered round.
I was looking for a Makarov back over 15 years ago as a carry pistol. My wife decided to surprise me with one, some type of commemorative edition with big walnut stocks and deep bluing. I never could get used to that gun. It was just plain uncomfortable to shoot (and I shot IMSHA beck in the early 1980s, with actual BIG guns). I would have rather shot my SBH than that little painmaker.

Upon further reflection, I must say that perhaps the incident with the 4-bore might not have been my most unpleasant experience with a gun. My Astra 400 tried to blind me last year. Safety glasses saved my left eye. The back end of the slide gave me a huge shiner, which I will not post here. If anybody out there has a 400 keep an eye out for cracks in the ejection port area.

So, a shooting buddy (happens to be a member here) once offered to let me take a shot with his new .223 WSSM. I thought, "Oh, .223, okay" and snugged my eye up next to the ocular lens...

I have a nice crescent-shaped scar through my right eyebrow (more visible now that my hair has white, er, lightened). Yes, it was painful, kinda like walking into a Mike Tyson left hook.

My briefly-owned Mauser HSc pistol was painful to shoot, as was an Airweight .357 with 125-gr magnum rounds. Both quickly traded off...

My Browning 1886 SRC, before I put on a recoil pad. I don't remember the load, but it hurt. 2 shots, dismantled the rest of the rounds.

Sorry to hear about your Astra 400 mishap. While it supposedly could take several other cartridges, like the 9mm. Steyr, 9mm. Browning Long, and the 9mm. Bergmann-Bayard (another name for the 9mm. Largo) it was also discovered that the .38 ACP could also work in the Astra 400. Since the .38 ACP basically shares the same cartridge dimensions of the .38 Super I guess it was only a matter of time (and dwindling supplies of 9mm. Largo ammo) before some shooters decided to step things up a bit and started running .38 Supers, which was way too hot for the Astra's straight blowback design. The result was cracks developing with the slide where yours did, around the ejection port. While the 400 was a well designed and solidly built gun, it was never meant to handle the kind of chamber pressure of the .38 Super.

Least fun was hot 357s through a 2.25" SP101 (25 ounces) on my arthritic hands although 38+P not a problem. Traded the SP101 2.25" 357 for a fixed sight 3" GP100 that weighed 10 ounces more, one more round and comfortable shooting 357s.

.50 caliber muzzleloader with the brass butt, heavy conicals, and 90 gr powder. 7 shots to sight in left me black and blue for a week.

The worst was a Ruger 77 mk II in 300 Winchester; the recoil wasn't too bad but some idiot threaded a muzzlebreak on the barrel and even with earplugs the report was brutal. You didn't dare sit beside whoever was shooting it, either; muzzleblast was killer.

Runner up would have to be an LC Smith F Grade Hammer 10 gauge that I used to own... I loaded my own blackpowder cartridges for it, and they were rather "healthy". The gun developed a tendency to jar off if you cocked both hammers. Sometimes I'd forget, cock both barrels, and they'd both go off. That will pretty well put you off your goose hunting for the day.

Honorable mention goes to my Remington 700 30-06, I'm good for about 10 shots in it. Same goes for the Winchester 94 30-30; it's so light, it smarts after a few rounds.

The least fun to shoot ?
For me it might be the Thompson 45 cal , that thing was about 20# and trying to hold that to eye level for any length of time was no joy. Cool gun just not fun to shoot and makes me wonder how a GI could pack that thing around.

I never shot factory Supers in my 400. But its previous owner might have. I always pulled the bullet and dropped the charge by a couple of grains. That was a pain in the butt. .38 Automatic ammo was too hard to find. Supers are loaded to 36,500 PSI. Don't know what Largo's are loaded to but 9X19s are currently loaded to 35,000 PSI, at least in this country. The +Ps are hotter still @ 38,500 PSI. These are SAAMI figures.

The interchangeability myth is just that, a myth.

The 400 was never designed to shoot any cartridge other than the Largo. The Steyr round will work because it has a slight taper. It will chamber and fire quite nicely. The opposite usually won't work. The straight tapered Largo round usually won't chamber in a Steyr pistol.

Trying to shoot 9X19s in a 400 will sometimes work, if the extractor slips over the rim during feeding. The 400 is a "push feed" system, the extractor snaps over the rim after it is fed into the chamber. If this happens, the extractor will hold the case against the breech face and the round will safely fire. But if it doesn't happen, the 9X19 round is pushed into the chamber and sits there ahead of the extractor, about .070 thousandths away from the breech face. The 400 has a free floating firing pin that is spring loaded, similar to a 1911. One of two things will happen next. 99% of the time nothing will happen. The firing pin will not quite hit the primer. But if the chamber is dirty and the 9X19 isn't pushed far enough into the chamber.... Guess what happens next....This didn't happen to my gun, it was simple metal fatigue, leading to a crack and failure.

Scout21, here's my shiner.

The least fun gun I’ve ever shot were my AR’s, just kind of boring.
The one that just hurt to shoot was a single shot 10ga a buddy of mine used for a turkey gun.
The worst I’ve ever been hurt by a gun was a Marlin 1895 and an 870, in both cases my stupidity was to blame more than the gun.

Seacamp LWS 32. Maybe a few more trips to the range will improve things but my first two trips were not that fun and it throws the cases up and often in your face.

Flatop Ruger 3 screw w Keith load. Twist in hand and chew web.

Another was Mossberg 835 w slugs. Wasnt too bad really, w 2 3/4 or 3 inch.
But it had some issues, cantilever rail didnt converge w bore, 3.5" chamber wouldn't shoot any sabot for crap, and the bore was rough.
So it took 2 days, and 90 slugs from the bench to work through the problems/testing.

That one hurt deep down in the joint for a while LOL

Still have my TC Hawken Silver Elite .50 cal.
Must be something funky w stock dims as that gun bashes my cheek like no other.
100gr FFg and 385gr Great Plains bullet.......sucked.

If I go w a 255 gr Maxihunter and 90 gr FFg its more behaved but might click me a little, once in a while.

Buddy has scandium J frame and let me try it w Corbon .357.
Not the most pleasant.
But very "invigorating" :)

I've not had an issue with any particular gun so far as recoil so long as had a good shooting position. I have however been very unhappy shooting SW x-frame 500. Way too heavy to hold steady even with 2 handed grip and recoil flips too much for anything past that first likely miss. What's the point of a 6 pound revolver that requires a shooting stick? Also not a fan of the muzzle blast from 7" AR pistols. Too much fireball next to my whiskers.
