Everything any .gov has “we” paid for either from taxes or from the resulting inflation from them just printing more currency but it’s nice they are not making us pay extra.

Good idea, but why not chuck the whole permitting process if you're not collecting any fees to administer the program?

SD has, they are a permit-less carry state.
However, with other states still requiring a permit, and some of them having a reciprocal relationship with SD, getting the permit may be desirable for travel still, so it makes sense to make it a free permit.

Yeah, I get that. I guess that's a legislative decision as to whether enough people/voters want a permit for travel purposes. I also have to wonder about my home state of AR, as we do essentially the same thing. One difference might be that our General Assembly appears to have made us a permitless carry state by accident.

I would guess that the number of people that want the permit for travel is low enough that offering it for free is not a major burden on state finances at this point. So its basically a useful government service (a rare combination of words that is).

I think they are like NH. I don't need a permit to carry, nobody does here. There is a permit system still in NH, and if you want to go to a state that has reciprocity and requires a permit, you are better off to have a NH permit, and not risk getting in trouble.

Same in Texas. No license needed for open or concealed carry although a license is offered for those that travel out of state or want to save time or avoid the no charge background check.

Don't forget a state-issued permit provides protection from the federal 1000' gun-free school zone prohibition. That and others are very good reasons to maintain a permit/license.

My state did away with the concealed carry permit requirement. I just renewed it because of the states that accept it (reciprocity). Since it’s MY choice I didn’t mind paying the cost to assist my state with the administrative costs.

A bonus of having the permit here in Texas is when you fill out the 4473 for a purchase they just write your permit number down instead of having to call in a background check which can be quite a delay at some places. I tell people whose background check doesn't come back quickly or comes back with a hold to go get a carry permit to ease future purchases.

SD Governor is just an outstanding politician. She’s the female version of DeSantis.

she is the driving force behind this move. Good on her!

Here is an interview with Governor Noem. At 38 minutes she talks about signing constitutional carry and dropping the fees for permit and more on 2A. There is good info in the beginning of the video on her upbringing which is very impressive.
