I went through a Ruark phase a few decades back, and while I couldn't scrape together the cash for an original British rifle, Ruger obliged by introducing an affordable version just as the bug really bit.

It's in .416 Rigby, and while it never did go to Africa, it's been carried all over central and northern California and has accounted for its share of wild boar. It also has seen countless cast bullets backed by Trail Boss, which turns the big boomer into a fun toy - and has allowed far more practice than I otherwise would have been able to tolerate.

I'm not quite as obsessed with "old Africa" as I used to be, but the romance still is undeniable. I would love to see your examples!

I've got the same rifle. I also need a good load for stalking a wounded V8 engine block into the tall grass of the cinder pit. Do you remember what ratio of Trail Boss powder volume to total case volume for using cast bullets this cartridge?

Holy broomsticks batman, how long is that barrell?!

The only thing i have capable of being a big game rifle is an AR in 50 beowulf. I wont sully this thread with it. Otherwise an M48 Mauser in 8mm is as big as i have.
26 inch. Factory barrel. Has a good kick to her. Not bad though. She will let ya know she alive though.

I used the original advice from IMR: a maximum load has the bullet touching the powder with no compression, and a minimum load is 70% of that. I honestly don't recall the numbers anymore - and with Trail Boss being nonexistent now, I plan on finding some 5744 and working up a cast load with it.

<edit> Dug out my notebook for the gun and saw that 35 grains was max and that I used 25 grains as my minimum - and usual - load.

Here is mine, a Winchester 1895 that I converted from 30 US to 405 WCF. I have two loads, the Lyman 412263 that drops a 310 grain bullet. One load is factory equivalent using 3031. The second load is much milder, more like the 40-72, the Lyman bullet over 28 grains of 5744.

In my locale, the only truly dangerous animals are of the two-legged variety. I carry a handgun for those.

To date, the only wild animal that has ever challenged me was a very ballsy gopher, whose burrow I was flooding with a hose at the time -- he was dispatched with a shovel. No bears or mountain lions in my neighborhood so far, and the various foxes, feral dogs, possums, raccoons and coyotes all ran the other way after they saw me. I once encountered a raccoon the size of a Rottweiler in my back yard that sauntered off rather slowly, but he did leave.

I suppose my Ruger No.3 in 45-70 could be a borderline candidate with a hot and heavy load?

Have a Siamese mauser in 45-70 that would cover about anything.
Are these hard to find or costly? We're there many made and are they fairly common to find if you poke around. Just kind of had this floating around in the back of my mind that I wanted one. Recently watched a YT vid where an old feller was touching off some pretty mild loads and it looked like alot of fun.....

Browning A-bolt converted from 7 mm Remington Magnum to 375 Ruger.
I don't have any real dangerous game loads for it, My standards are either 260 Nosler accubond, or a spear 270 grain BTSP at about 2850...... I probably should put together some 300 grain loads for it..... Might even try some 350 SMK's.... Turn it into a giant Grendel

It will be awhile before I get back around to building on it but I got this Bauska action back in January to build a 505 Gibbs to protect myself from the roaming elephants of northern minnesota.

Navy arms made a few in the 70s, most can be a little crude. Mine is the nicest on I've seem, stock and medal work Are better then average.last I've seen they were $500-$600 maybe up to a grand now, from what I've read it a rifle people really regret selling. Very pleasing with trapdoor loads but loaded not there brutal. Most loading books have 3 levels of loads but with these and ruger no1 there's a 4 th. Had swift 400s up over 2200 before, not much need to go over 1500 tho.

This one could be refurbished someday, has some worn bluing and some starches and small dings in the wood. Need to replace the limbsaver pad it went mushy, May drill and tap it to, they newer lpvo would work nice on these.

I wish I got one of the cz 505 Gibbs, no need for it but would be fun. After I finish my 9.3x62 on my Argentine action is like to see about a 404 Jeffrey build. Or go the other way and do a 6mm.
