What did you shoot today?

Went shooting with friends for the first time in years.

Friend brought a couple sweet guns of his dad’s:
  • Beretta Stampede single action revolver in .357. Case hardened and fancy blued. Shot some .38 Special through it. It was great fun; a nice tactile change from my usual double action revolvers.
  • Some kind of Sako stainless bolt action in .243 Winchester. Laminated stock with a Zeiss Conquest 5-25x50 scope. Really nice. My buddy shot the first group; first three shots went in the same hole at 100 yards, then groups opened up as were shot it more without letting it cool.
  • He brought his Beretta 92 with the straighter grip. Those are STILL nice shooters; very soft recoil and accurate. Such a slick action. They may not be quite as reliable as a Glock, but they’re a lot nicer.
I also shot some of my old favorites:
  • Ruger Mk. II Target model, with the tapered bull barrel. I bought this as my first gun, used, in 1997. It’s still a tack driver. I have the nice Hogue grip on it.
  • Ruger 77/22 in 22LR. LOVE this gun; wish they were still made. I bought it used in the early 2000s from a gun shop that was eaten by the O’Hare airport expansion. :-( (wish I had a 77/44…)
  • Ruger SP-101 in .357 with the 3” barrel and Crimson laser grip. I was shooting basic Remington .38 Special, which it doesn’t like. It likes my light .357 hand loads. They’re loaded in .357 cases at about .38+P level. This one, I’ve tuned and polished the action myself, and while it’s not as nice as an old Smith, it’s nicer than any factory Ruger DA.
  • My new Sig P365. What a great little shooter! I plan to make this my CCW, after I take the class.

I missed to report the last range outings but this morning I spent some fun time with a Haenel Mod. IV KK Sport made in the VEB Ernst Thaelmann Werke. It is a very well made rifle and I had to take it apart to fully appreciate the precision metal and wood work on it. While the Federal Auto Match does not work in all guns, I supect hard primers, the old lady shot every round with pleasant precision.

Got to shoot my two favorite guns today. I changed the sight on the 617 to a Burris Fast Fire II AR with 3 minute dot. I was pleased to find the dot was bright enough and was easy to see. I still need to test it outdoors and see how it holds up but for now it's good.

I started at 7 yards to get on paper and then moved back to 15. All shots stayed centered on a 6 inch target and I didn't have to adjust the sights at all.

Next was my Black Mamba. I changed the diode from 12 MOA to 6 MOA on my C-More Slide ride. After changing the dot size I did have to re sight in the gun. Moved it up about 3 inches and left 2. Now I'm shooting dead center.

I'm trying to see if the smaller dot will help my accuracy. School is still out on that.

You have a big advantage over me. You shoot mostly the same guns. I used to do the same, shot just a few guns and did much better. Now I am testing so many different guns that I dearly miss shooting my own personal favorites.

Thanks.
I've settled on a few that I like and these two have really been my support group guns. When I need to relax I can always depend on them.

Went to what I have named "The Strange Range" this morning.
The view from the 100 yard bench.

And what it looked like after nearly three hours of weed whipping,

Then I shot 24 rounds through my 1991 Anaconda. (not at 100 yards)
6 rounds of a 240 grain Nosler JHP with 19.5 grains of 2400.
18 rounds of 240 grain Sierra JHC launched with 21 grains of 2400.
Both loads touched off with Winchester WLP's.

Going to stick with CCI large pistol magnum primers.(350)

I had a slightly frustrating morning at the range. The 1963 vintage Anschutz 1416 had the bolt drag over the rounds in the magazine, leaving deep gouges. The DST was set too light for me, too. I had built that gun from parts, using the nice stock I had lying around for over half a decade and could take care of the issues at home.

The Shadow Systems had the lightest spring that Shadow Systems has available for that model installed and it is still oversprung with the comp. Once it warms up, it starts becoming unreliable.

The .22 l.r. Walther PP had every shot from the first mag giving either extraction or feeding issues. I had four other mags with me and they worked fine. I will try the mag that gave me problems in some other rimfire Walther PPs and will not be surprised if they work in at least another gun.

Gorgeous!

!) Made by Walther in Ulm Germany: "S&W" M&P .22 LR handgun.

2) Maadi AKM, manufactured in the town of Maadi Egypt on Russian tooling.

The rifle has Nothing to do with "Ayatollah Atari" or his militia, which a few of you heard about in 2006-2007 or so.
I had a Maadi back in the day. It was the crudest, ugliest AK I ever owned- and the most reliable and accurate!

I only had time to putz around with a couple of .22s. My Marlin M99M1 is still exhibiting unacceptable ejection issues- gonna take one more go at fixing at before sending it down the road.

Got the old Mossberg 46B sighted back in. It didn't care for the cheap Aguila fodder I brought, but produced nice groups with Norma Match and Federal SV-

Yup, and varnish on canoe paddles and fishing rods, brows and frames on glasses and plastic on hearing aids.

I love deet!

So to stay on track of what did you shoot today..........lots of bug-dope!
Can be used to clean up fogged plastic headlight lenses too. Use carefully and sparingly- there are a number of good Ytube videos on it.

And what it looked like after nearly three hours of weed whipping,
About five hours of chainsaw work, cleaned up everything (Cut it up and put it in a ditch), except for the last, and biggest, tree, too pooped. :)

Old pic, but what it looked like before I started.

After I was done. Hotter than heck here and high humidity. I'm done with real physical stuff for the weekend.

I'll shoot tomorrow.

Did some load test shooting with my Sig 1911 Nightmare Fastback 357SIG, and 3 45 Colt's Ruger OM Blackhawk, NM Flattop Blackhawk and Colt SAA. Found the The Sig prefers the 147gr bullets from RMR. Colt shoot 4" to the left, and the Flattop is an all around joy to shoot no matter what load.

Did function testing for the T&B .32 Cal 64 Gr SWCs in four .32 ACP pistols
